Hi.

Its unfortunate that there are less and less FireWire laptops available at a reasonable price today, so i'm looking at the Focusrite i18/20 Scarlett for on-site recordings. i have a FW Focusrite LS56 for my studio.

What i would like to know is can i link them together via ADAT and use the USB as the master going into a laptop. That way i could record 16 tracks when playing live, for example.

Anyone any thoughts ? I asked this of Focusrite, but so far no reply. Thought i'd see if anyone has done this sort of thing here.

Cheers and thanks in advance.

If the LS has ADAT in/out you should be able to.  How much control you have depends upon the focusrite soft mixer (sends, etc. - some ADAT ins/outs just have straight ins and outs).  Also, if the Saffire is the "master" or main controller, you still might have to have a FW computer to initialize the LS if it doesn't remember the settings.  My TC Konnect will.

Anyway, once you work out those, you simply plug the ADATs ins and outs.  NO word clock in the Saffire, but ADAT will carry the sync.

As for the lack of firewire laptops, I would not give up on it.  There are more and more laptops that feature thunderbolt ports which is compatible with firewire via an adapter.  I have an ASUS with TB and use a Saffire Pro 24 with it; works flawlessly without any connectivity problems what so ever.

Kind regards,
