I picked up a pair of these recently - a little confused.

I've always read that mixing should be done at low volume levels - the insert that came with these says the standard is to turn them all the way up. Obviously my level input will determine the overall volume level - however should I have these up fairly loud to get some air moving while mixing?

To date I have always mixed with headphones, so this is new to me - and listening to old mixes I hear the error of my ways.

Input is appreciated.

I don't use KRKs, but how much volume you can get away with has a lot to do with the space you're using your monitors in.  It's usually easier to get a good mix that will translate at lower levels.  Mixing at lower levels also makes the room acoustics a little less of an issue.  If it sounds good with less volume it will usually sound good when it's cranked up.  There are a lot of variables with monitors and the room you use them in that will have an impact on your results.

I believe it means that it's best to leave the level control turned up permanently on the speakers and control the input level from elsewhere, e.g. from the interface.  It doesn't mean turn everything up.

wickerman - I have KRKs as well. I haven't yet gotten in to final mixing with them so I haven't tried all the variations yet. I have to say for me so far, my ears really like how these monitors sound at any level including very low levels. It's very helpful to have monitors.

Okay, I see what you're saying.  I've had a few different brands and have never seen one that recommended that.

Got it, thanks for the replys. I'll just leaves these guys set at 0dB and adjust my input level. I do like the low end adjustment on them for room placement.

Thanks all.

what kev said.

it's about clean headroom on the speaker amp, NOT volume overall.
