You are looking at trash as trash. In fact it is a product that needs to be handled efficiently. The most troublesome part of that handling is the scattering of the product in transit, which creates a secondary and inefficiently distributed trash situs, which requires re-collection and containerization. Even if it is just going to the landfill, the transport process is complicated if a garbage handler inadvertently dumps a two foot pile of used diapers and kitty litter on the sidewalk, or the hallway of your apartment building. Packaged garbage is just easier to handle.
