Hi Everyone -
I am a real novice at this.  Here is the link to my first song that I shared on Soundcloud.  I used Cakewalk Sonar Platinum to compose it (I really like this software).  I would be very grateful for any feedback on it.  I know very little about mastering etc..  I just finished my first year in high school and really like making music- but I always want to learn and improve.   I have already learned a lot from this forum.  Thanks

Well, I would have never guessed this is your first project!  You have a lot of interesting lines weaving together and it all fits together very well.  Also, this is well recorded.  This is very impressive work  -- I believe it to be one of the best instrumental pieces I've heard on this forum.  Bravo  !!

This is really nice and well done. You have a great concept of motion which gives this bit a huge interest. I love all the textures and the use of the different bow techniques and pizzicato.

My only crit would be the lack of dynamics which this is screaming for.

Very well done!!!

hi
bravo in terms of composition this is very good. you have made good use of different articulations in the strings and especially the fast bowing in the cellos sounds very realistic. the actual music is rather swallowed up by the reverb however; dial that back totally then add back in until you can just hear it. right now the violin/viola is getting lost in definition.
if you had told me this was a recording of a Vaughan Williams piece I would have believed it though so musically is superb, without perhaps that killer tune that RVW always brought

Wow really? Thanks! I am really happy you liked it. It took me a long time to get the nerve to post it here. I really like creating music, but I know I have a lot to learn. I do it at home in my spare time and have no training. So your feedback is really appreciated. Thanks again.

What would you suggest for dynamics? I will definitely try to adjust the reverb. Thanks for the advice and also for the encouragement.

Dynamics, in this case, means having softer, then louder passages. Currently, your entire track has a fairly consistent dynamic, thus lacking in emotion. The composition itself is quite good, you just need to take what you have and refine it.

Entertaining.  Around 2:01 or so it sounds like one of the violin samples go flat, I was listening to talk radio at the same time so sorry if I'm mistaken.  It's pleasant to listen to and for first time out it's pretty damn good.  I doubt Mozart could do so good, although with the tools we have today,he  probably could fart 4:22 of bliss.  I suggest you study music and get training in harmony and form if only to be able to give a grid to your ideas, a skeleton upon which to build something.  It meanders a little;  which isn't necessarily bad if that's what you want(?!)   For instance listen to the last movement of  my award winning camp:   https://soundcloud.com/david-sprouse-76324214/camp-1-gnat2-bear3-wood-4-fire It's intentionally static, it basically goes nowhere. If you study the history of music, at least you'll be able to defend whatever you choose to compose against puerile criticism from the know-nothings like us! :D:D

For a first showing this has got a lot of potential, you do need to bring back the reverb on it though as that is costing definition on the instruments.  It could also do with some level/dynamic/volume changes read quite/feel/loudness variation.

Very good first shot though keep them coming lots of very experienced people here only to happy to help you to develop your song writing and recording techniques.  Thanks for sharing.
