I need someone to identify the organ used in the song "You Didn't Have to be So Nice" by the Loving Spoonful. I think it's the same kind used by the Boxtops on "The letter".  I'm a guitar player so i don't know these things.  Someone please help me!

I was going to name this thread "Can Someone PLease Identify this Organ", but I could only imagine the replies that would have gotten!!

I'm not sure but I bet Ham N Egz can tell you! I always thought they were Farfisa organs in that time frame but I saw a few Hammonds too

The organ is really buried in the mix on both songs.  I'm guessing either Vox Continental or a Farfisa.

I'm not a keyboard player, but often look for those vintage sounds in recording and cover tunes.

It could be either the pancreas or the liver...  But I might have my organs messed up...

In the Boxtops video I saw, it was a Hammond B3 .....the king of all organs.  A huge drawbar and tone wheel double manual beast, usually played thru a Leslie rotory speaker.......break your roadie's back....The B3 has percussion, Sounded like he wasn't using the percussion tabs. Everybody from Jimmy Smith to Procul Harem (Whiter Shade of Pale) to Steppenwolf, Three Dog Night, Deep Purple, ELP, Kansas (Wayward Son) and Gregg Allman wailed on this monster...............sounds go from sweet and gentle to Meaner than Hell..................There's a great, free VST called VB3 that nails the sound and includes the rotory speaker/doppler sound...........its a killer set of keys..........Ron

My best friend growing up was a manager at a Sherman Clay Organs and Pianos store on the west coast (and top salesman three years in a row Nationwide - yes, he was over the top annoying - lol!).

Back in 1987 he got a call from a lady whose husband had passed away.  She wanted him to come take an organ he had kept covered in one room of the house.  She was willing to give my friend $200 if he would just take it away.  She hated the thing with a passion because her husband seemed to pay it more attention to it than her.  My friend pulls the cover back to see an immaculate B3 and just about falls over.  "This could be worth a lot of money!" my friend tells her and she replies "I don't care if it's worth a million, I hate it and I want it out of here!"  My friend says "Ok, but I'll give you $500 for it."  She was surprised to get anything, but didn't have a clue what it was really worth.  He sold it the next month to a Japanese investor for over $29,000.  Turns out it had papers inside it proving the Rolling Stones had used it.

Just another reason why I never trust sales people!  LOL!

I don't believe it's an organ. What I hear is a Wurlitzer EP.

For what it's worth ...
Here's a YouTube of the Boxtops playing "The Letter" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9FwcZS8zaQ
It appears to be a live recording. Looks like a Vox in the video, but who knows what was used in the studio.

Jude77, you could try playing around with some of the electric piano and organ sounds using the synths packaged with various versions of SONAR to get a sense of the various sounds.

TomB:

Thanks for finding me that link.  It's much appreciated.
I'm starting to think it's a Vox, which I'm realizing is going to be a tough sound to find.
