The Vox Continental and Super Continental combo organs ( which I owned and played )  are solid state  and have a harsher, more limited "electric" sound than the Hammond B3. Both have drawbars rather than tabs. The free VST "VB3" is based on the Hammond which is a much more capable instrument. I use the "VB3" and can easily get 60's combo organ sounds which are less complex than the Hammond sound. The "VB3" has three sets of drawbars, overdrive, rotor and many other options. If you can't find a Vox you should download the "VB3", I think it will do the job and its a much more varied instrument IMO. than the Vox. Just trying to help......good luck......Ron.

Ron:
Thank you VERY MUCH for weighing in.  I will definitely check out the VB3.  What I'm liking about the sound in "Nice" and "Letter" is the nice round tone that the organ has.  To me it sounds sort of like a calliope.  However, I am very organ illiterate.  Do you think the Hammond could get in that ball park?

The "rounder" calliope sound you describe is easy for the VB3 to generate. There are about 30 presets and the drawbars make the choices practically infinite. As I said before "from sweet and gentle, to Meaner than Hell".You can sculpt the presets or "design" from scratch just about any kind of organ sound you want easily, and Its free so give it a shot.........check it out on Youtube..  type in   "VB3"    or     "ORGANized trio" .........then Google "ORGANized trio" @ "VST for Free" to get the free download............you won't be disappointed...............good luck...........Ron

Bitflipper, do you hear a Wurli even in the Boxtops tune?

No, I was referring to the Lovin' Spoonful tune.

In The Letter it's a Vox Continental. They may have used the proceeds from that hit to later upgrade to a Hammond, but in the original recording it's definitely a Continental.

For reference, compare with these other classic examples of the Continental in 60's pop:
- The Monkees doing Neil Diamond's "I'm a Believer"
- The Animals, "House of the Rising Sun"
- Dave Clark Five, "Because"
- The Doors, "Light My Fire"
- Iron Butterfly, "Inna Gadda da Vida"
- Question Mark & The Mysterians, "96 Tears"

Excellent!  That's what I needed to know.

That's the start of a pretty fun playlist right there!  Maybe add Strawberry Alarm Clock with Incense and Peppermints...

Good point, Craig. I forgot about that one. "Keep on Dancing" (forget the band name) is another. Also "We Ain't Got Nothing Yet" by the Bloos Magoos.

Of course, a list of every 60's song with a Vox Continental in it would be a very long list. I had one back in the day and I still like the sound of it, especially through a Leslie sim.

Sadly the free Martinic Model V, a excellent Vox emulation is no longer officaly available from source but I found it here http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Audio-Plugins/Combo-Model-V.shtml#download I am not sure how ligit this link is, beware of all the clickbate if you go to the site, but the actual download appears fine. There are 32 and 64 bit VSTs.

I beleive it was withdrawn when the developer was employed on Arturia's Vox emulation. The Arturia one is nice with a lot of added effects and features but the freebee will give you the basics to which you can add your own effects.

If you have the full version of Kontakt Hollow Sun's Vox is very nice for £15.

Native Instruments Vintage Organs has Vox, Farfisa and Hammond organs, the hammonds are not quite up to VB3's standard but its a good all round package.

UVI has a VOX continental and several other models in their Retro Organ Suite but you don't have the control you do on the other products I mentioned.
