Jump on in my friend! There's plenty of room for all of us.

I spent some time last evening with the standalone and about an hour this morning in Platinum using the Vst It appears to play nice in both modes. Now, I feel forced to do some user manual reading (the easy part) and comprehension (the hard part)...   Keeping an eye out for more videos.

I bought the AMR (Sting Ray 5 string). Here are some first impressions.
  • Download, instalation and activation was straightforward. Simple challenge and response activation, but it may be an issue if your DAW never connects to the net.
  • It sounds very good and fills a gap not covered by my NI and OTS basses. The built in effects are quite good but I would probably use it with Amplitube or GR5. I tried it with the Amplitube and the standout was the Fender 2 '53 bassman, it sounded fantastic.
  •  There are a pile of riffs provided and its easy to load them, change key of the whole sequence and edit individual notes in the Riffer window. A wide range of styles is included.
  • Dragging MIDI to Sonar seems to work OK, on the couple of riffs I tried you get the notes, the relevant keyswitches and bend and modulation data. I looks like with a bit of keyswitch reassignment the MIDI may work with other VSTis (One would probably have to export in STR mode).
  • The channel mode is like MIDI guitar mode where each string has a different channel and this works fine in Sonar (tough luck Pro Tools users PT does not support this, nor does Ableton), but there is also the more basic STR mode which apparently works in all DAWs.
  • Building your own riffs in the Riffer window looks reasonably straight forward, but you will need to think like a bassist with the string assignment if you want to make your Riff as real sounding as possible. - < This will be the hard part.
  • So far I have not come across a song mode to string patterns together but I would be more likley to assemble the track in the DAW in anycase.
  • Time signatures are supported up to 8 steps in a bar, so none of the stupidly odd time signatures I am wont to use ocassionly, but most options common are covered.
  • I noticed after purchasing other products has a further discount, the price of other basses for example dropped from $89 to $80, I wonder if there are further discounts as you add more products?
I think its a keeper,  it seems reasonably straightforward so I think the learning curve should be gentle.

Thanks for posting about this. Looks pretty cool and unique. Also if you bundle them you get a bigger discount. 4 bass instruments came to 240.

I wonder how easy it would be to drag the midi to control other bass VSTis that use different keyswitches.

Thanks Glyn for the detailed review.....very helpful indeed. Looks like I picked the wrong month to give up Bass Vst's!!

I picked up the Acoustic Upright Bass and the YinYang Bass - both are very nice.   The upright is exceptionally nice for jazz tunes - I matched it with AD's jazz drum kits and am very happy with what I am getting.  Now I am thinking of splurging on Impact Soundworks new Straight Ahead Jazz Horns...

BTW, the Riffer module is even more detailed than Ample Sound indicates - there are LOTS of scale choices for you to to choose from.  Not sure if the DICE (random) feature is that useful - I couldn't really come up with anything too exciting using it, but it was easy to write my own lines with their new notation method and quite easy to add slaps, bends, etc.

Although it's called a drum map, it could be used to translate Amples keyswitches to (say) OTS keyswitches. Simples.

I have to say that the Riff Generator is quite nice...
certainly a welcome addition to the Bass Instruments...

Here's a review of the Ample Sound Yinyang Bass.  I've got their free P-Bass, so I've checked out their other basses, and this one definitely looks interesting

Great review! That just cost me some money...  The tapping is a Very nice feature.

I also ended up getting the J-bass pick extension lib and it is like getting a whole new instrument for around $62.

Thanks again abacab.

Regards,
Rick
