English spelling used to match the pronunciation, but now it's desperately in need of an update. Check out the English Spelling Society.
 
This mess can be fixed.

It's a mess for sure.  My own observations tell me that it's being fixed.  For the most part, people ignore the rules in day to day communication.  More and more function trumps form.  Considering that dictionaries provide a record of usage rather than a prescription, it will all work out over time.

I have heard of, and often use the word "buggerlugs," but I am wondering what "Buggerlugging" means...

Of note though.......at home, we do use the Oxford dictionary as our primary dictionary (comes in handy when playing scrabble and boggle).

I've always liked the stuff from the OP.  I used to have a fishtank on my office desk with the label "Ghoti" on it.  Got a few questions about it.  Not even sure if I could remember the potato one though!
