I'm thinking of getting a telecaster type of guitar to play more finger picking stuff, but I'm not sure if that would be my best choice, I haven't been to the music shop and haven't tried all the toy's they have to offer when it comes to playing guitar.

I know it ain't perfect, it's just a start on my playing this style and this new instrument you might say. And having the blues one lonely morning.....

Hi Serious_Noize! ,

Overall as far as the playing went , it was loose in the corners which is OK because you are working on a " new expressive playing type of thing too you "
I did like your playing ( listened the day you posted and just now )

I'm putting myself out  on a limb from this point on.....
As a Tele player for over 40 years , I'm not entirely convinced that a Tele would be the right type of guitar for this type of thing ...Yet, I'm absolutely sure it would be an improvement over the Epi Les

Since I have heard this clip at least 4 times, my impression is " Think Chet , what would Chet do ? "
For the record , I  happen to think you can nail that type of sound in Spades

In your travels, if you ever happen to make it to a music store with a little time to kill , I think you would do well to try out an Epi semi hollow like a Casino w P 90's , A Gretch w filer-trons pick ups  or w DeArmond 2000 single coil style pick up s ...A Strat w flats using the neck middle pick up combo would also sound very nice  ...

Didn't mean to go all OT on you , I did like your playing .

all the best,

Kenny

Reason I say Tele, well, when I say Tele, I'm talking about a Squier Knockoff for 199 dollars with a maple neck, which honestly I like rosewood but maple seems to be longer lasting.

It's a money thing where guitars go for me, and I wouldn't mind trying to play some slide guitar blues stuff. And by that, I don't mean adding slide guitar blues lead only additions to songs, I mean an entire song with slide guitar like Ry Cooder has done and things like that.

That's why I was thinking a maple neck tele might be good for me overall. Although I'll be the first to admit, I haven't looked at modern guitars or shopped in years for anything where guitars go, I simply don't have the money nor do I wanna get my hopes up by wasting my time shopping for something that will never happen. Although that's me.

I love the things you have posted Kenny, they are AWESOME! And Thank you for taking the time to go out of your way with advice, I will keep it in mind. I'm kinda torn, I need the Strat for my Hard Rock pick playing stuff, and thought the Cheap Tele Strat I mentioned would be perfect for finger picking and slide guitar which I wanna learn more of. What I have now is an Epiphone Les Paul Special II, it's okay. When I got it, I thought the small neck would be perfect for me, then I realized I am basically playing a guitar that is a 2 by 4 with strings and some knock off humbuckers.

My old guitar was a Martin Stinger, which had a knock off floyd rose, which I got over 20 years ago, it's beyond fixing, too much to explain. Although I will say, it was a good knock off of the Fender Strat HSS style of guitar for it's time. The new Fenders from what I understand or at least the one I'm hoping to buy sometime in the near future has a HSS configuration and REAL FLOYD ROSE unlike my knock off years old guitar, but most importantly, it has a Routed body where the pick configuration goes instead of that 2 by 4 solid would, meaning it will resonate with sound when you hit a string instead of it just being caught by the pickup only where sound goes.

Anyway, thank you so much for your advice Kenny, I really appreciate it very much!

I am no pro, and I am just trying to explain my situation and experience when it comes to guitars and such.

For the price, this is what I am looking at : http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/squier-affinity-series-telecaster-special-electric-guitar

Thanks again!

Good Lawdy Lord ... Serious_Noize! ,

Between all the typing  you and I have done in this thread ,
I think it would be sufficient to say that both sets of our fingers have gotten a serious work out during this correspondence .

My moneys on the idea that "we both could safely bypass our daily guitar scale practice routines for today "

I'm all in for you getting a Squier Telecaster ...I actually posted this post of mine for your benefit in my thread
http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3414861
The same guitar model you want to buy is the same guitar model I played on the song ...only mine was bought used , plus I modified it (since I do my own work ....up to a degree )

I certainly know exactly what it's like not to have a lot of Cash .
In Truth , I'm very grateful to play what I do have ...
My Axe's and gear range from very top shelf to " what ? are you serious ?...you played that and got that sound ! "

I routinely sidestep all questions online when people ask me what my signal chain is and what guitar I'm using ...
FWIW, My signal chain and what guitar I played on a song is generally kept very close to the vest .....
That space is always for Rent  I have some of the gear I was gifted with in the past ..even as a total unknown , which I still am apparently lol

Guitar brand snobbery is absolutely one of my pet peeves .
I will purposely play a 200 dollar Les Paul or Tele knock off on a tune because it may work the best for the tune .
Then I will post my tune on a Cork Sniffer Guitar Forum where "whats on the head stock is all that matters " to some folks ..
I won't even tell them that I'm not playing the Les I own, a Gibson Historic R 8 Custom Shop , or my Vintage Tele

You get where I'm going with this ?

As far as my suggestions on guitars before go , I was thinking out loud and It ain't no big thing
play and buy what makes you happy

As far as your Epi goes ....I think I'm gonna keep an eye out for one of those used on CL

I love taking guitars of that quality , fixing them up , adjusting them , using emm on a tune , and then posting the tune where I used that "standard of quality " Axe over at forum where the official "Internet Head of Guitar Brands & Models " featuring "Head stock Inspector # 68 " is in charge

Guys like Inspector # 68  always talk about the bloom of the tone  , the airiness of the guitars sound and pickups , the pedigree of their Dumble Clone , the flame of the maple cap and 10.000 other things that are absolutely meaning less ....

If only they Knew , Yes, If only They Knew ...

If this was all about playing pool instead of playing the guitar , they would have found out that they just got beat at the game of hustling pool by a guy using a broomstick   that is if I did spill the beans

all the best,

Kenny

Thanks Kenny, The Epiphone Les Paul Special II, It's an almost identical replica of an original guitar my Uncle had, a Gibson 69 Melody maker, except for having different pickups the neck and everything are identical. Along with the wood configuration. Although I have no regerts or REGERTS that is. It's great for playing distorted or enhanced type of sounds. But as for playing clean sounds, pluging it into my line 6 Spider II amp I don't like it where clean sounds go.

I've been using Pod Farm 1 sounds and actually tried a demo of the TH3 Overloud Sounds lately and am really impressed with their overall settings for amp and etc.... They sound true to form I think where adjustments and stuff go.

LOL, I got me 3 lottery tickets tonight, A sure fire WINNER, I just KNOW IT!!! Hahahaha Yeah right!!!

Either way, my backup plan is to roll with what I got and figure out how to get better and stop complaining about "HOW I WISH I COULD DO MORE". I guess that's a good plan isn't it? I mean, ONLY YOU CAN DO BETTER RIGHT?

The Epiphone Les Paul Special II I bought around Christmas seems great, but feel's small on the neck, but that being said, what I was trying to say was : To get better using any guitar, you have to spend some time to get to know it I guess, and if you are comfortable with it to begin with then you most likely wont spend the time to get to know it and well..............

No point really, just saying : Not gonna blame my guitar for what I play or how I play, it's better to just roll with it I guess and let the chips fall where they may.

Thanks again!!!

very cool my mate - I'm not a technical guitar player by any means but can totally appreciate your technique on this one.

Bobby, listen to Kenny.

Kenny is the man.

He even has 'tele' incorporated as part of his forum name.

Kenny knows Telecasters.

Kenny made me buy a Telecaster.

I bought a Telecaster.

A USA Deluxe model, sunburst body/maple neck:

Kenny did not make me buy it actually.

I'm glad it did buy it though.

It looks gorgeous, it sounds gorgeous and it plays gorgeously.

I thought about asking Kenny if I could borrow his Tele for about 20 - 30 years or so, but I figured I might get hit by a real AXE instead of a guitar AXE by asking such a question.   Kidding of course.

BTW: I wanna say Thanks Steve, I remember you told me about using settings on Pod Farm, when there was just a Pod Farm one and I had no idea about anything, that helped me a lot. Thank you. Sometimes a little direction helps a lot ya know.

A tele, well, Knock off, will be my next goal. But dang it I really wanted that Fender Strat. And I am Picking LOTTO Numbers as we speak folks!  Either way, just being able to speak means a lot. And even my cheap guitar while flawed like me trying to sing songs is better than nothing.

No complaints, I guess. Hahahaha......... Kidding of course.......

I like my Epiphone Less Paul Special II, it's just that I feel like I am playing on a 2 by 4 with pickups. It's a guitar built for distortion and not clean sounds in my opinion.

LOL! There I SAID IT!!! I wanna STRAT!!! And if you play nothing but CLEAN GUITAR WITH A GIBSON please chime in and tell me what I am doing wrong.

The routed body of the Strat I think resonates better than a Gibson ever will, but the problem with the strat is that it is ALWAYS 21 FRETS........ I guess that's a copyright issue or something. But I mean really, 21 frets?

Oh well, I want a Tele and a new Strat and a James Tyler Variax!

I just purchased my lotto tickets, if I win then more than likely I'll give the money to the family.

All that being said : I'll roll with my Epiphone Les Paul Special II, it seem to be my 2 by 4 of choice for now.

Bobby, I recently added a USA Deluxe Strat (again, sunburst body/maple neck) to complement the Tele Kenny made me buy...

I picked them both up new at really good discounted prices. I'm guessing the retailer was trying to make room for the Fender 'Elite' series that seems to have taken over from the 'Deluxe' range.

I've christened them 'The Twins' (see my sig) as they're so closely matched.

Note these are stock images I've used, but one of these days I'll post some photographs of my two guitars in the flesh, so to speak.

Hey James ,

I heard that Inspector # 68  approves of your choice in Telecasters  ..... I would like to get one myself .

Hey Steve I'm glad they lifted the Ban

Hey  Bobby ,
If you do happen to get yourself a Tele or a Strat , you could always use your Epi for a slide Guitar ....

Man, Those look great!!!! I am wondering, and I have only used a few guitars in my life, most all of them were with a Rosewood neck fretboard.

Which one do you think is better over time? A Rosewood Neck or Maple? I have always used Rosewood and really have no idea?

I get the impression that the Maple Fretboards, they kinda look like a glossy scratchy thing, although I really don't know. That is when it comes to fretboards.

Those are some Awesome looking guitars, and what I will probably try and buy in the near future is the Squire Tele, it seems to have some great reviews. Mostly I wanna get it for finger picking the guitar and try and learn how to play real delta blues slide guitar.

I really wanna buy the Fender Strat with a real floyd rose in the near future, but that one will have to wait.
Either way, I'm getting ahead of myself. My Epiphone Les Paul Special II guitar is better than nothing at all and I shouldn't be complaining.

Thanks Man!!!!
