I still had to teach myself 90-95% of what I know and could play, and I wished at least that they actually had bothered to teach sight reading in music like everyone has to develop fluency with English, instead of using the pathetic lame mnemonics. I couldnt learn pieces in a decent amount of time because I was never taught or got any proper practice in sight reading, and then learning how to use recording software was incredibly minimal even at university - again my friends that were already good at music production had been self learning at home since their teens.
So let me see if I got this right.
1. You're not as good as you could have been if the school and your parents had done a better job of getting you better training.
2. Your friends (who were already better than you) were self teaching at home since their teens.
That about sum it up?
Wait no ...
I couldnt learn music production in my teens because I didnt have the required software / hardware.
I could have benefitted from classical / theory / sight reading / development of proper technique lessons from a private tutor.
