Ouch! Is the laptop running Win 8, and/or is the USB port a USB-3 port? Those seem to be the major issues these days with interfaces, not particular to any one brand.
No, the laptop is running WIN 7 64. When I check the device manager I DO see some "USB 3" references and according to specs - yes, it's "USB 3" -
