Back in the what, late 70s, BBC Radio 4's original adaptation of "The Hitch-hiker's Guide To The Galaxy" used Shepard tones a lot as sound effects. Some of us spent ages trying to work out how they were created back in those pre-internet, pre-digital anything days.

A task at which we failed. Badly.

Interesting. I was already aware of the concept and the Pink Floyd example (i.e. the fadeout in Echoes). Thanks for reminding me about it. I am now intending to apply the idea to a sound effect that I have been working on, a rocket taking off and ascending.

I sometimes use con sordindo with a touch of harmonics to bring out the notes that are quite a valid note for effect. Takes away the boring synth string sound.
