Lynn
There's a lot of great talent on this site, in fact, sometimes it's overwhelming.  I first came to this site a few years ago because I thought after 40 years of recording, I could offer some insights to new artists.  However, I soon discovered that I didn't know as much as I thought, and this place became a classroom for me.  After a while, I learned to listen more and give advice less.  I started learning a new way of production that is better suited for the digital age.  Slowly, my analog thinking evolved, and I began seeing new ways of producing music that better suited my own style of writing.

There are a ton of good people who are here mainly to offer advice and their ears, rather than to promote themselves.  They don't beg for comments, and they don't need to because they have given so much over a long period of time.  There are also people here that ask for comments, and then become critical when someone tells them something they don't like or something they don't expect to hear.  It's become easy to spot the self-promoters over the ones who want to actually learn something.  I had to learn humility before I was ready to learn something new about my craft, and I hope that it continues that way until I'm no longer able to do this.

I bring this up because I'm grateful to all those who've helped me in the past (you know who you are), and a little disappointed by the few who don't get this.  Peace and creativity to all.

Well said Lynn, I hope I fall into the helpful category as that is what I aim to be :)

I always try and find something positive to say while being honest if something sounds off.

Nice post Lynn.

I've heard some astonishing music in the 10 (!) years I've been hanging around here, I remember it being quite a humbling experience when I first started posting my own music.

It is a shame about those who choose to demand attention without much by way of return, but by and large I think they're outweighed by those that freely give support and sound advice.

Personally I love hearing music made by my contemporaries here, for one thing it gets me listening to genres and styles that I wouldn't usually.

Well put Lynn!
My mixes are much better because of the input of this forum.   I am very grateful.   Other than buying my DAW, learning to use it, joining the forum has been the best thing I did.  It's a no-brainer to have an extra set of ears let alone several sets!  I actually have the attitude, "Well, this mix sounds good to me.  Now let's have the forum improve it."  And, they do...

Hi Lynn , I agree I also have learned a lot over the years here on this forum .
It's one of the best forums on the web , there's so much talented people created music of every style .
Yes I might have had some rough times with few people in the past but that's behind me now and that's why I'm back hoping to learn more .
For six months I did nothing , recorded nothing until two months ago .
I managed to create and record two new songs , I'm trying to get back into my music again after dealing with hospital stays and two surgeries .
Six heart stents , it's been a tough ride for me dealing with all of my health issues lately and I was hoping rejoining would get my mind off of those heart issues and just maybe I can learn something new from people like yourself who is knows much more about music then I do .
Take care Lynn , I will be around

I'm here because if I listen to something I produced 10 years ago to what I'm doing now, I can hear the difference. The difference is due to:

  • Hearing what is possible
  • Hearing what you need to hear when you are too close to your work
  • Hearing about how to do something that makes you think "I didn't know I could do that"
  • Hearing in your mind how you would want to hear something when you listen to another persons creation and knowing what would help achieve a particular sound, then sharing

It is a great place and has been a huge boon to me personally. Thanks for sharing Lynn!

Regards,
Dan

Not everyone here cares the slightest bit about the quality of the recording.  You have to face that reality.  For some it's simply the music.  For some who have actually studied music it's composition, audience, and performance.  The art of recording has an effect on the perceived performance only to people who sit in their mothers basements and rock forwards and backwards, or bounce their knees nervously.  At least that's my observation.  I however enjoy learning new things...I figure I only got like 20 years left if I'm lucky.  Can't go out like a fool!

I see many times comments that are really just polite words without too much substance. It's all good that we encourage one another but it can be misleading to hold back constructive crits because it might hurt some egos.
I have always tried to give honest feedback in a positive way that might just make a difference to someone.
To me, the only way to improve is to listen to those that know what the heck they are talking about and that want to help for no other motive than to be generous with their experience.

This forum has always been a great place to showcase one's work. I too am amazed at the talent coming from all ages.
Carry on wayward sons!
