If Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard are your references, chances are they were using the studio standards of the day, Lexicons. Mutt Lange in particular was a fan of creative reverb effects, pioneering techniques such as gated and reverse reverb on snares, but curiously did not favor reverb on vocals, preferring delays instead. It was a signature of Lange on many albums.
One of the hallmarks of those bands and that style is that vocals were heavily overdubbed, often with each part triple-tracked. One might be tempted to credit that lush vocal effect to reverb, but that wasn't it. It was good microphones, good singers and lots of patience.
I'd suggest Lexicon for period authenticity if you can afford it, Valhalla Vintage if you can't. Big difference in price, not a huge difference in sound.
