Anyone out there have / use an ADK mic? If so, what say you.. The reviews are good... I have found the ADK A-51S (switchable pattern) on line, but assume it is a discontinued model, since this one is not on  the ADK site... The new A-51 Mk 5.1 (fixed pattern) is there and looks just like the 51S.

Thanks

i have a ADK Hamburg.

i've had it for about 6 years now, have used it on most all of my recordings, for one thing or another.

for the price, it is a wonderful mic.

it DOES have a peak resonance that i don't like, but is in line with the 'lineage' that it is a clone of........

i've used it for vocals, acoustic guitars, percussion, electric guitars

well worth the money.

The Maillard Reaction

ADK is one of the very few companies who imports microphones with their name engraved on them and then offers to take one of them apart for you in their USA custom shop to modify it so it sounds good.

I think that is very nice of them.

best regards,
mike

I am struggling with whether to buy a fixed pattern or switchable model for figure 8  M/S recording of my acoustic guitar - which is a technique I have not tried yet- Not having a figure 8 mic. As tempting as it sounds to try, the room is medium budget quiet; so I worry about to much ambient room sound being picked up and wasting good time and money on that kind of mic - which will probably be my only reason for me ever using a figure 8 pattern.

I have an ADK A-51S and it sounds great on male vocals and guitar.  I like it.

LOVE my ADK A6, and as a company ADK is a pleasure to deal with.

I have a pair of A6's that I use for recording the upper rotor of a Leslie cabinet... I won't say that these MICs wow'ed me and they sound pretty good but you get what you pay for... they are NO Neumann U87s though.

I might sell my pair and look for something else that does a bit better job with the AIR.  I have a couple of HELIOS mic pre/EQ lunchbox units coming and will try these mics through these units and see if it improves the sound noticeably.  If they do, great, if not, it will be back to the drawing board looking for a somewhat matched pair of mics that sound more realistic.

"they're no U-87" . . .

To be fair, our $200 and $250 models couldn't possibly be U-87! How could they?

If you check out some of the Custom Shop models in the $1k to $1500 range,
I think you'll find that the specs, tone, and build quality do indeed rival a U-87.

(Especially the new Berlin-47 Tri-Polar!).

Apples to apples as they say.

Cheers!
