Are there any freeware or cheap audio editing software programs for Windows that allows you to import/rip tracks from a CD? I want to do some sampling and transferring the audio tracks over from iTunes is time consuming.

Have you tried Windows Media Player?

Never used WMP for anything other than playing CDs or previewing wav/MP3 files, but that doesn't seem to give me any advantage whatsoever over ripping it using iTunes, does it? Looking for an audio editing program that can rip a CD track and then immediately trim what I need.

Exact Audio Copy rips, but doesn't edit.

Light versions of Samplitude can rip audio from CDs... and burn audio to CDs.

iTunes rips CDs as fast as anything else I've tried.
The only hassle is that you have to retrieve the MP3s from the iTunes folders.

Once you have the file Wavosaur is handy free editor.
