Just a bit confused...  I've got two 3TB internal hard drives now.  One is in the PC (and slow as snot) while the other has all my stuff backed up and is in a fire-proof safe (the so-called "disaster" copy).  Ok, I think I can now afford another one for use with normal, day-to-day backups but, when I go to Newegg to check out another Seagate 3TB internal hard drive, I find THIS.
 
Eleven(!) different Seagate 3TB internal hard drives with prices all other the place and not much of a difference in their descriptions!
 
Can anyone give me a brief overview of why there are so many?  I would also love some opinions on which ones are worth it, which to avoid and are which are simply unnecessary.
 
Note that, due to the lags I seem to get accessing my current 3TB, that IT will become the backup drive and the new (hopefully speedier) drive will replace it in my PC.

Just set yourself a price range, that should narrow it down

Hello... pricing is always subjective to features, availability, construction and performance... these units could be used in corporate databases... so the higher dollar ones have longer warranties, construction/performance parts, faster return/replacement policies and firmware differences that is helpful for IT Guys.
 
Some units have a new Box ,new Screws, and new cable and some are "barebone" drives only...
 
Basically... if you have the motherboard Bios, Sata and power connectors needed... the lowest priced one will work just fine for you... but with any product, please check the recent reviews... click on the un-happy ones to see what problems were reported... as with anything that is mass produced, there can be cost cuts, quality issures, in what is available or warehouse stocked, at the time of your purchase.
 
 
 

I just had my C: re-imaged (from a ghost copy) and had my E: (libraries) replaced with a new one (it was fine but getting older) and now I have back-up HDs for both.
 
The guy asked me about looking in to "Solid State" HDs? And said they are more expensive, but very fast? My C: drive works well holding Sonar and other apps, and my E: drive works fine with my libraries, Kon-etc, EWQL Gold, Ivory, etc... And F: is a 3rd that holds my projects (backed up on G: an external USB drive) I'm pleased with this arrangement. But the idea of Solid State HDs seemed intriguing? Maybe for the next system when my current DAW "Bessy" and her Sonar 8.3/XP32 give up the ghost... 

Thanks - I continued researching for a couple more hours and still am not sure exactly why some cost several times the cheaper models, but found that I didn't need one of the more expensive ones anyway...
 
@The Band19 - If you search through this forum, you'll find that the topic of SSD's has come up several times with some very good replies from those that actually know what they're talking about.  Good luck!

:-) No need for luck, it will "hopefully" be several (6? 8?) years before I need a new system... By then (if I'm still converting Oxygen to CO2), I'll go with whatever has been out and proven stable for some time ;-) I was just passing on info they gave me while trying to upsell me at the store.

Process of Elimination:
I would not pay for encryption.  For Windows 8, BitLocker works fine.  For <= Windows 7 TruCrypt is a very inexpensive option (free).
 
Not sure I would pay extra for a 5900 RPM drive.
