Hi guys,

As normal I'm after feedback on the mix and orchestration. I tried out different mixing on this one, really working to get the depth of the instruments right. Also applying what I have learnt from studying my local orchestra. I feel this might be my best piece yet. look forward to your views.

Thanks guys :)

Update- Thanks for all of your tips on how to get this working/sounding better.

My initial impression is that it sounds very natural.

  • The timpani blends a little too much with the cellos, so I would suggest panning it left of center
  • Piano could use a bit more dynamics, it would add to the overall "feel"
  • I can almost hear the musicians turning pages :)
  • Try dampening your reverb a little bit

Overall, this is a really nice piece! I think you did a great job.

Regards,
Dan

That was pleasant listen/mind trip and the orchestra does sound quite convincing.  Nice one Gus

Composition aside, I do think this could be one of your most "natural" sounding mixes.   But I also think part of that is down to arrangement and the articulations you've chosen, and not purely mixing.   Either way, who cares, sounds great!

But I enjoyed the composition too, good stuff.   I liked the repeated downward melody and how you continuously twisted and turned it around.

I really like the melodies and it is also well orchestrated. And mix was good.

Beautiful piece! Orchestration is good. It sounds like the 2nd flute is too low at 1:55. You can use a clarinet, it is often used for that purpose. Liked the arrangement with the returning piano figure.

This is a good one! Super original. I like the off-timings of the piano figure, that occasionally remind us that nothing is always perfect. Nice contrast to the rest of the piece, rhythmically perfect.

Mix wise, I'd agree that the tympani isn't particularly distinct, it blends a bit much for my taste. Did you layer tympani upon tympani? If so, maybe cut a layer of them off? Or, dry it up a little?

But as a composition this brings tons of introspection into the mind. Original as the proverbial snowflake. Really great job!

cheers,
-Tom

Dan- firstly thanks for the kind words and tips. I have moved the timps to center left, quite heavy drums to lift. Piano has more dynamics now, also added more use of the pedal. Backed off on the verb too.

Wook- Thanks for lending me your ears. Always good to get your feedback on my progress.

Steve-I mixed this one differently from my other piece, really worked at using the verb to position the instruments. Also thanks for keeping an eye on my progress.

Daryl- Cheers for you thoughts, ears and words.

Kakku- Also like to thank you for keep checking on how I'm getting on.

Leizer- I listened to your newest piece to hear how you had things laid out. :) The 2nd flute was a bass flute, but I have gone back and added a Clarinet to colour this part and more. Thanks for the help.

Tom- I really appreciate your time you give my pieces. As well as moving the timps I cut some verb on them too.
