Slightly off topic but pertinent.  Notice how TV, the cable channels in particular, are gradually loosening up on what words are acceptable?  We know routinely hear "****" (one of George Carlin's magic seven that would guarantee you'd be off the air if used not all that long ago) more often in episodes of dramatic fair than not.  I'm pretty sure I heard the F word un-obscured in a recent episode of Expanse (best SyFi channel show *ever*, by the way).  In some cases, the F word is present in the script but the word gets beeped.  However, the beeping is getting shorter and quieter with each passing season.

I not only think this is ON topic, but part of the reason why newer swear words aren't being created.  Back in the day when you couldn't say the "real" swear words, new ones that weren't censored were made up (like "flippin'" or "mo fo").  Now that more and more are being used freely (like on most cable channels and, unfortunately, so-called "Top 40" pop music), it's unnecessary to use anything but the known swear words.

I can think of a couple of current politicians' names that will likely end up being used in some (many?) circles as cuss words pretty soon (if they aren't being used in such a fashion already).

And at least one word has "cleaned-up" since its original meaning/use: "jazz."

BTW, I suspect the "beer is proof..." quote may have originated with Martin Luther, or possibly even Buddha, both of whom a well-educated man like Ben Franklin would likely have been familiar with.

Add "joint" to the list of words that are less salacious today than their original meanings would suggest.

New usage would be that they have been rebranded into everyday Texting abbreviations.

Many think that it's a corruption of a quote from Franklin in Poor Richard's Almanac regarding wine, but you may be correct; Luther (and Calvin for that matter) certainly echoed the sentiment, as did many of the Puritans.
