I use older AKG K240s and have been happy with them but am thinking about adding more phones. I am considering the AT ATH-M50s and the KRK KNS8400s. They are both in the same price range. I think the ATs have been around longer and have a larger fan base but I am not sure that makes them better.
Has anyone had any experience with the KRKs? I am a little inclined to do business with a Gibson owned company because I like their philosophy but getting the better phones matters. I am probably going to add a Focusrite VRM box too.
I don't like shallow phones that might touch my ears. My ears don't stick out like Alfred E Neuman or anything but I think the foam in the AGKs has degraded to where they touch just a little and after a while it makes the tips of my ears sore. Guess I need to get new pads too.
 
Anyway... any feedback on the KRKs ?

well, i have the ath m50's and the akg 240's,  and i like the akg's better.
 
 
actually, the only headphone i've used in recent times that better'd the 240's, was a set of ultrasones:

i don't think they make the 650 anymore, you could look at the 550 or 750 models

I use KRK's at work.  They are comfortable and seem clear and accurate.  Maybe a little light on the bottom end.  I have not used them for mixing.  They seem to be built well and have held up to radio station abuse.

Thanks folks. I thought the general opinion was that the m50s were the schinizzle... I am glad to have this input. I will take a look at the Ultrasone phones. Perhaps I should take a trip to a big store and compare the m50s, KRK, to my K240s on something I am familiar with.

It really sounds like a lateral move to me. Just another sound source to get used to. If you are going to get the VRM that might be enough variation rather than adding a different set of headphones in the mix too.

I always have 2 sets of K-240's on the go. When the first set gets gross, I buy a second set. I take the cloth covers from the new set and put them over the manky leather ear pads on the old set. I take one of the cords from the new set to replace the cord on the old set. I now have 1 refurbished set and one brand new set. By the time the new set is worn out I buy a third set and set 1 is off to the trash or spare parts.
 
This always assures a working set and a nice clean set for visitors.

I've got the 240s, the M50s, and to be honest, I prefer Sony 7506 phones over both. They're comfortable, and not harsh. I really only track and spot check with phones. The M50s work for this, and they're pretty comfortable. They also seem to be pretty durable.

KRK's are very popular.  However, to me they've always been more on the "consumer side" or even "DJ side" of the line than the "professional studio" side, with all of their equpiment (no offense intended to consumers, DJ's, etc).
 
KRK is very affordable and they aren't bad at all, just not what I would buy if I were buying for a studio.
 
for home use and for personal use, yeah, if the price is right.  but for me, there are alternatives.
 
I've had the ATH-M40s and while they're OK, I don't plan on buying another pair.
 
The Sennheiser HD-280's are great lower end cans for studio and they are VERY comfortable.
