Hi

I just upgraded from an older cakewalk product. I get sound if I load a sample file. But if I create a new project, I don't. I've been trying to figure it out for the last few days, but so far haven't. I don't have an external midi device. I add an audio clip, and then I use the staff view to type in some notes. And then I try to play what I have entered but I don't get any sound. The audio graph is just a jagged single line in my clip. I also noticed that if I expand the track, that I don't have any volume, pan or gain (I think it was gain) controls. I am I missing a step? Do I need to add an instrument somewhere? I think I used to do that in the old version I used to use.

Thanks

You are correct sir! Data that is typed into the Staff, or Piano Roll, is just that .....Data. It has no sound to it what so ever. So to hear this data a VSTi instrument must be loaded into the project and data directed to the instrument. See hear.

The controls on the track header are set by the drop down above the track headers just below the track view menus. In the picture below, the drop down below the track view menus in the red box is set to Mix.
The option can also be set with SHIFT and the left and right arrow keys.

There are a number of great free videos: CakeTV YouTube, and some tutorials, as well as written documentation.

There are also commercially available videos and some well-written books that would go a LONG way toward getting you up to speed on X3.

Sonar has a great deal of powerful features - and it is worth investing some time up front to understand what those are, and how to use them.

This forum is also a great resource for information and help with working out problems you run into.

I hope you have a BLAST learning how to get the most out of Sonar X3 - great product.
