  • X3 won't let me select Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 with ASIO [solved]

I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8.  Upgraded to X3, and learned that my M-Audio Fast Track Pro isn't supported for Windows 8.  Upgraded to Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, because it is supported with Windows 8.  Now when I go to configure my devices and settings, if I use ASIO the Scarlett 2i2 is grayed out in the audio devices section, so I can't select it.  The only other option that even recognizes the 2i2 is MME(32bit), but the sound is garbled with that one.
I'm using ASIO4ALL, and in the past I was able to go into the ASIO Panel and turn on the Fast Track from there, but the 2i2 isn't showing up in the ASIO panel.
Any ideas?

The Focusrite driver is grayed out because another driver is present and selected. Only one ASIO driver may be selected for input and output. Deselect both input and output ASIO selections and the Focusrite driver should become available. Even better uninstall the ASIO4LL software from the PC.

ASIO4ALL isn't really ASIO, it's an ingenious wrapper for Windows sound protocols that fools programs into thinking they're seeing ASIO. Basically, it allows Windows to do something it was never intended to do, and it's very clever, but I have seen it interfere with "real" ASIO drivers when installed on the same machine...even if it's not selected.

The optimum use of ASIO4ALL is with laptops when you're using the internal sound card. For any application involving an external interface, use the dedicated drivers for that sound card and remove ASIO4ALL.

Remove ASIO4ALL completely and make sure you are using the latest drivers on Focusrites download page. Ta.

Thanks for the tips, everyone.  I've removed ASIO4ALL, and installed the latest driver for Scarlett 2i2.  Now I'm getting an Audio Device Error: "The following drivers either do not  support the current audio format, or are in use by another application."

I am using a laptop, so I'm not sure if that's the problem.

Nevermind.  I figured it out.  I ended up having to keep ASIO4ALL and use it as a kind of proxy driver for the Scarlett 2i2.  I used the ASIO panel to select the 2i2 as an input device, and my Realtek Audio soundcard as the output.  Then I just had to manually turn the Realtek speakers back on in the control panel (not sure how they got switched off in the first place).
It's an ugly mess, but it works.  And the latency is virtually unnoticeable.
Thanks again for the help!

Yes, that is an ugly solution. A better solution for DAW use would be to monitor through the Focusrite and completely eliminate dependance on the internal sound chip. Relying on both audio devices is not a good idea.

Are you definitely using the ASIO drivers, or WDM? The reason why I ask is you can aggregate multiple interfaces with WDM, but usually not with ASIO. It sounds to me like Windows is grabbing the interface for its own nefarious needs before Sonar gets the chance.

As an aside, it's really unfortunate that Windows makes it so difficult just to set up an effing pro sound card. People shouldn't have to go through all this just to be able to use Sonar. This is one area where the Mac is way ahead; Core Audio is standard, fast, and can aggregate interfaces easily. While I think the Mac's reputation for ease of use has a large amount of hype over substance, audio interfacing is something Apple really got right.
