One of my Alesis M1 Active 620s died today.  Considering repairing it, buying a used one or getting different monitors altogether.

Actually, is there such a thing as a monitor whose sound is not colored too much by the room it's in? In other words, a monitor that sounds pretty consistent regardless of its environment?

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Depends what your budget is. :)

Come on Leadfoot, you can do better than that! :-)

Let's say, I would like an upgrade that won't break the bank.

Well, maybe take a look at the JBL LSR305's or the Yamaha HS5. The JBL's are around $300 a pair, and the Yamaha's are around $400. I've heard good things about both, but haven't personally heard either one. Not knowing what you're looking to spend, I just picked a couple of the lower priced ones.

Thanks Leadfoot! Do you know if there is such a thing as a monitor whose sound is not colored too much by the room it's in? In other words, a monitor that sounds pretty consistent regardless of its environment? Regardless of price. Just wondering.

I have the Yamaha 80M's and the Subwoofer. Not sure what number breaks your bank but the 80M's are around $800 for the pair. The woofer is $400. May be cheaper now. I bought mine a year ago. As far as monitors sounding good no matter the room, My monitors sound great in my room but for a true or good representation of what I'm hearing out of them I had to modify the room acoustics some.

Unfortunately, the sound you hear will be affected by your room, regardless of the monitors. There are some kits by Auralex and others that are pretty inexpensive and can get you going in the right direction, acoustically. I suggest keeping a little of your budget for room treatment. It will be money well spent.

I already treated my room, according to the sound of the Alesis monitors. My concern is getting different monitors might also mean having to change the room treatment, which I'm not looking forward to. Might have to stick with what I had. Thanks for the advice, guys.

I wouldn't think you would have to change your room treatment. If it's working for you with the Alesis, it should work with other monitors.
