AndertonThere are probably at least 10 speakers in your price range that would do the job for you.

Ha...truth....decisions, decisions.
I should have been more specific in that I compared/listened to the KRK's, Truths, Mackie and one other I can't recall but is well known.
There was something about the KRK's which I perceived to be an evenness among the frequency range with expected bass response.
I was quite excited to go the 'active' route using cannon connectors and love the front ported bass design.
But, I won't forget the almost 20 years of reliable use I got with the now dated 3-way JBL4410 monoliths.

Great suggestions Anderton.

Good luck weed hopper....carry on.

guitar center, hate going there but ordered tham about 4 monthsago.
I love them.

Well I wasn't going to say it and sound all hypey, but since you said it...your perception is correct, the response is quite accurate on the Rockits. They're known for not sounding particularly flattering, but telling you what your mix sounds like.

I got a chuckle out of your response.
To be sure, all my creative drivel sure could use some 'flattering'. :)

But, in all seriousness, you made me think about it.
The JBL4410's were 3-way and flat.....and that was my conditioned listening perception/reference over many years so I"m guessing the KRK's were somehow similar to my ears.
I really don't mean to over think it or split hairs on these (my) perceptions.

As a side note: I listened to the KRK's 6"'s also....I liked them and my perception was the same.
For me...going form 10" monitors I much preferred the 8's which have more presence when mixing by pushing more air with less effort.

I wonder how that OP is doing?

Carry on....

I've had the opportunity to review JBLs and I always felt they hit a sweet spot of accuracy and flattery. They also got the three-way thing right, which is not easy. A lot of people think a three-way must be better than a two-way - it's three instead of two, right? It goes up to 11! But that makes tailoring the crossover and getting the speakers to complement each other much more difficult.

I think it would be very difficult to buy one set of speakers and have them satisfy in getting tones ,bass response, level checking. I have JBL 4412's/NS10M's/Auratones/Yamaha HS5's. If I was asked to choose only one of these I wouldn't be able to. I no longer use the NS10m's--I use the HS5's instead. They are my main speakers. I only use the Auratones and JBL's for mixing/mastering (though I usually send to G&J Audio for mastering because I know the main engineer from my younger days.) The Auratones are for levels, the JBL's for tone, and the HS50's for everything. Not a wonderful sounding speaker, but translates well. I can't hear levels properly on 8, 10 or 12 inch speakers. I need to double check on the Auratones at low volume. Depending on your genre (unless it's rock) I wouldn't suggest the Rockit's. Get one of KRK's higher end brands or get the Yamaha HS80's.

That could very well be plus I think you (and Micheal Japan) have more experience comparing different brands than I do.
When I bought the JBL's I did no comparative listening to other brands.
I lived in the mountains near Yosemite as a carpenter and based my decision only on a lot of reading as I had to purchase from the Bay Area music store I had traded with since the 70's....guess I got lucky.

Hi Micheal....my material is what I'd call light rock and the KRK's just sounded good to me.
So many choices for us to choose from these days.

A great weekend to all....

Just FYI KRK monitors have a huge following among hip-hop engineers/producers, I've been told it's because of the bass translation being accurate. Also very commonly used by rock guys. I like the VXTs because they work for pretty much anything I've thrown at them.

Another very important consideration is ear fatigue. Some speakers seem harder to listen to for hours than others, but of course, that's not something you can evaluate on the floor at GC...nor is it something that shows up in a spec.

Also I've reviewed some speakers that are competitive with KRK (obviously I won't name names) and advertised for studio use, but have a significant bass bump around 100 Hz. That definitely flatters the low end, but if you mix on them, it's a mixed bag because the bass will sound right on something like Beatz headphones but not on more accurate listening systems.

Michael's point about multiple speakers is a very good one, I used to switch among speakers a lot at one point and use headphones as a "reality check." These days, with so many people listening on earbuds and headphones, I switch among headphones (KRK 8400 for overall, AKG 702 for high end, and Beatz for low end, in case you wondered) and use the speakers as a reality check. Times have changed...

I found a pair of used KRK VXT 6 for $450 and can get a pair of Yamaha HS8 new for about the same price. I'm torn at the moment. The Yamahas sounded really good at the store and are new w warranty, but the reviews on the KRK VXT 6 are great and Anderton seems to like them.
