Hi , just upgraded my computer from 4GB to 8GB Ram and installed a 240GB SSD drive at the same time.
What files do you think I should move onto the SSD for best performance
I moved Sonar X3 program there , but am I better holding on-going project files there  , then onto the physical disc when finished ??
Any guidance appreciated

I have a 480 GB SSD as my C: drive and only store on what absolutely has to be there, i.e. Windows operating system. I have three 3 GB hard drives, one that is external for back up. One of the internal drives is used for applications (Sonar X3), plus project files. The second hard drive is for any samples.
Although SSDs are getting more reliable as far the number of writes, I'm just playing it safe. The external drives are fast enough for Sonar to run without any hangups.

I don't use it for just the OS.  There are other programs that are read only that I put on the C: drive. 480 GB was the largest I could order from ADK Pro at the time. I would rather have too much than not enough.

I put all my main applications and OS on SSD's. The failure rate on my Intel drives is so low that I don't worry about it anymore. I won't be going to spinning disks for anything more that backup and archival storage.

I have a 128 GB Intel ssd and have the OS and most programs in an 80gb  C: partition on the SSD.  The rest of the SSD has more programs and all of Sonar X1 and X2 Pro with all of the accompanying samples and several other sample libraries, but minus the Sonar loops.  User data and "My xxx" folders and Sonar projects and loops are on hard drives.
 
With 240 gb you have room for a lot more stuff.  I've found having samples on the ssd makes a huge difference in sample load times.
 
Having more than one hard drive is also useful.
 

Hello Ric...thought I'd chime in on this one ! Before I start  I'll tell you this Firmware updates must be done before installing the OS no matter what drive you buy !  Here's the order ..

ADATA SX900 512GB 2.5" 6Gb/s Solid State Drive (SSD), Read: 540MB/s Write: 465MB/s (ASX900S3-512GM-C)
 
Do some reading ...If you need hardware support ...log on to the  irc.freenode.net  server..... channel... ##Hardware .. its a rath of talent and information !
 
 

Thanks for all your advice , guess I'm going to try the following:

1. Re Install W8.1 64 onto the SSD
2. Move the Sonar X3 program and associated files onto the SSD
3. Depending on the space left I may put my current project onto the SSD whilst working on it and then Save as to the Old hard drives as a precaution until I'm more confident.

1 and 2 can always be reversed If anything goes wrong
3 most of my work is not critical , so it will be a good trial for the SSD reliability & speed.
 
Now I've just got to get my new Korg Triton Taktile to work with Sonar , happy days!

I also recommend keeping much used sample libraries on the SSD. It speeds up the initial load, streaming gets much better performance and since those operations are read only the drive doesn't suffer from it at all.

I am buying a large (1 TB) SSD specifically for orchestral samples (Vienna Dimension Strings, Hollywood Strings, Vienna Special Editions, and whatever else I add).  Streaming orchestral samples from a spinning drive has been extremely disappointing and I have a lot of money tied up in libraries that I seldom use because of performance reasons.
 
While the box is open, I am adding another spinning drive for Sonar projects.
