I would like to download a second copy of x2 onto an external hard drive, in order to do  editing work on my laptop which has limited hard drive size.
Has anyone had any success or failure with that. What might be the limitations of the laptop?

.You don't put the program onto a second hard drive, you put the audio on the second hard drive.  I have Sonar 2 and 3 on my main drive.  I use a HP Envy 15 laptop, I7 chip, meaning 4 cores 8 threads. 8 gig of ram, so 64bit.  I use an external hard drive in a dock, better than those enclosed ones because of heat and power.  I haven't real have to push the thru-put but I get 24 tracks easily enough and I'm still using a USB2 dock so with a USB3 dock I suspect the skies the limit...or more than enough for most peoples needs.

If you don't need to do heavy-duty multitrack recording to the external drive, consider a solid-state one.

The sonar program is not that big. It will fit on your drive of your laptop. If its that full, where a program cannot be installed, then do some house cleaning or replace the laptop drive because you'll have no room to really  do anything with it, if it cannot fit Sonar.

Also, when Sonar installs it writes data to the Windows Registry. If you simply copy the program to an external drive and then plug the drive into your laptop and try to run Sonar, it will not function properly. If you want Sonar on your laptop you will need to install it there.

But like others have said, the basic program is not that big. And you can install Sonar with fewer options/features to keep the footprint as small as possible.
