I honor of Craig Anderton's gracious tips month I would like to add a possible tip for some.  I wish I could add more.  This may be a tip for new comers. 
I find it best to track as many of my audio tracks as possible before adding effects and mixing.  It is tough because I love the mix phase in Sonar!  Be strong.  This is done to reduce the possible latency introduced by some effects.  It also reduces the work being done by your PC. 
I also consider freezing soft synths before tracking audio to make midi tracks line up better with audio.  Others may have more input on if this is needed.

That is the way I've always done it.  Almost all tracks are recorded dry and whatever I want is added later.  On some tracks, I will "mixdown" the track with the effects to a new track BEFORE doing the final overall mixdown and mastering.
 
 

Not to mention that it also helps keep the creative flow going if you don't get distracted by "left-brain" editing activities!
 
Definitely a tip worth mentioning. 

I will usually add low-cost effects during tracking, swapping them out for ones that induce more latency once I begin mixing.
 
It helps to develop an awareness of which ones are really meant for mixing, and which ones can give a little assistance with reverb/delay during tracking without jacking up the latency.
