  • Cheap* mini mixer with AES/EBU outputs?

I'm realizing a little mini mixer that I port into my MOTU rig on the currently unused AES/EBU inputs could be a great convenience for patching iPods and such into my system for a quick listen.

Right now it's awkward because all my analog inputs are hooked and set for +4dBu balanced and I don't like messing with that stuff just to lisetn to an ipod.

Mini is the key word. a  1/8" stereo jack and a pair of RCA tape inputs to a AES output are the features I'm hoping for.

Thanks for any tips.

I don't think a converter with 1/8in input and AES output exists.  You could find one with SPDIF.   With AES/EBU You would need a converter along the lines of Mytek, Lavry, or Benchmark to remain small.  Not cheap of course.

Thanks.

In that case maybe I can find a small mixer with SPDIF and use a conversion cable.

Anyone know of a small format one.

Mike,

I know that my Alesis MultiMix (firewire) has SPDIF, but a check on their latest USB/FX MultiMix series - don't seems to include SPDIF anymore.

Their older USB/Firewire MultiMix 12 and 16 series are build with SPDIF, if you can find these.

Converting from SPDIF to AES EBU is not a biggie either:

It is mainly a level difference and not much else. You can even make a lead that goes direct from SPDIF to AES EBU and it will work. I have got a lead that drops the level down from AES EBU to SPDIF and that works fine. (even without a transformer just a passive attenuator)
You may need a transformer to go the other way though. (eg SPDIF to AES EBU)

So Mike don't let that rule a mixer out if it only has SPDIF output
