I tried it for a while and didn't like it.  I save ever few edits manually.

I have auto save on - it irritates me a little but, better safe than sorry

Here's what I do:  I "save" after making edits and I "save as" after making significant edits.

auto save has 2 options: save every X minutes, or save every number of changes you made
plus you have "enable versioning of projects cwp" which all basically do automatically what
you are doing right now manually. I like that cwp versioning he best.

All those setting are in edit->preferences->file->advanced

I use auto save every 10mins/10 edits with versioning.

I'm not a big fan of auto saving (in any application). I save whenever I think I've added something worthwhile to a song and I'll save a version at logical (to me) milestones in the songs development. I also backup every weekend to an external storage medium.

"...Here's what I do: I "save" after making edits and I "save as" after making significant edits..." Word for word out of my own book, Mike. That routine works for me. I haven't lost work in years. My project folders aren't over-flowing with multiple versions, just a reasonable number of them. And it feels good that I'M under control of saving. No problem - auto save is a fine option, I'm sure, but I so don't need it. Regarding the "under control of saving" thing, I'm guessing that at least some people don't know exactly how it works; it's actually quite nifty, and deals with that issue rather well.

If you open a file and start working on it, the auto-saves are not saved to that file. They go to a seperate copy called "Auto save of xxxxxxxx". You can work all day and not change your original file at all. It's only when you do a user-invoked Save that the original is replaced. If you don't do a user invoked Save at any point, you'll still be able to get to the auto-saved version as well as the original.
