  • Loading Kontakt 4 in Sonar X3e

Loading a library in Kontakt 4 takes a very long time, maybe 10 seconds, before the samples begin loading.  Granted, I'm using a large vocal library and some patches have nearly a GB of data.  But in Sonar 7 the same library would start loading much, much faster.

I don't think there are any settings that could alleviate this, but I could be wrong.

It's not that fast in Kontakt 5 either but this is probably down to the plugin from my perspective.

Have you tried loading the same thing in Kontakt standalone? You could also get your virus scanner to ignore some of these paths.

Hey Jerry,
Have you done the batch save thing?
If not check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4reaZG5cCn0

Standalone loads, I think, a little faster, but it does me no good as I have to have it running under Sonar.

Thanks,

Yes, I know about that.  Doesn't seem to be the issue though!

Do the samples live on the same drive as Windows and applications?  How are things arranged on your hard drives?

Is it possible that your sample libraries are fragmented?  If so, that would definitely add to load time.

All samples, wave files and midi files are on a separate drive from the OS and apps.
Defrag is done every few days.

The problem is with this particular library, Requiem Professional.  That's what I conclude based on load times of other libraries.

I looked at the product Read Me documentation, and couldn't find anything that talked about different options for controlling the loading of samples.  I was wondering if there was anything with that side of things where you could control how much gets loaded at the onset, versus as it plays, but couldn't find it talking about that.

I also did a bit of searching on the web for others having issues with load times, but didn't really see much of that posted about.

It was nice to see the product uses its own convoluted reverb - be careful of that while tracking, as it is really for mixing, due to its processing.

I wish I could point you to something you could tweak and be done with your loading time issues - sorry that nothing is coming to mind as of yet.

If my brain thinks of anything it will let me know, and I will pas it on,

Don't have a definitive answer, but what are your DFD settings? Was Windows 7 running a 64-bit system, or have you upgraded the amount of RAM?

Kontakt can stream from disk or load into RAM. If you stream from disk you're still loading the attacks in memory so they're available while the hard disk is seeking, but you're loading a lot less data.

It doesn't seem like you see a dramatic difference between loading in standalone vs. loading in Sonar, so Kontakt is probably exhibiting the same behavior in each instance.

There are options inside Kontakt for how much of the samples pre-load before the disk streaming starts. With a fast dedicated HD or SSD it may be possible to reduce this without creating problems.

From the Kontakt manual (section 5.3.6, under options):

On the Memory tab, you can optimize KONTAKT’s memory usage settings for your specific computer configuration.
Override Instrument's Preload Size: If enabled, KONTAKT will ignore the preload buffer size that's embedded in Instrument files since KONTAKT 2, and use the specified buffer size instead. We recommend leaving the preload buffer size on default value. Memory improvements might be possible by moving the slider to the lowest setting possible without experiencing playback errors.
