wanna love X3
Cactus Music
That's the third time I've read a reference to having Cubase installed causing issues in Sonar. Seems there some kind of special ASIO driver they install to accommodate on board sound users.. correct.
I'm about to re do my OS over to Windows 8 on my DAW and do install Cubase LE 5 as a matter of course just to use it for occasional midi editing. I can't say I have had any audio issues at all, but now I'm curious.

I don't have cubase, HOWEVER I have an eLicenser dongle I use with a few plugins from Vengeance

I too had fx bin lag for a while. Drove me crazy!!  It took a lot of searching to find the problem(s). The part of the way solution was to upgrade my video card and also some houskeeping to remove some older or poorly written plugins. I also had snappy response with the fx bin in previous versions of sonar, including X1 and X2. So it is an X3 thing, but that doesn't mean it's a bug. X3 is built differently and I found I needed to stay with plugins that are either better written or more suited to X3. Typically most plugins were fine, but I knew I had way too many old freebies loaded.

Another note: My problems with the fx bin really started becoming noticeable after I loaded the LE version of Cubase that came with some hardware. Even though I uninstalled CubaseLE, the problem stayed.

And finally, last weekend I reformatted my hard drive and reloaded the OS and only the software I needed. It had been over 5 years and I had about 50 gb of crap camping out on my OS. Now, everything including a snappy fx bin is working great. My 5 year old machine is fast, sonar X3e is running great at low latencies. (I have a studiocat daw)

I hope some of this helps you as you try to find the root cause of your observations. It may require some time and effort to undo something that is interfering with X3. My ultimate solution was to have a clean OS. It was needed anyway.

Cheers

Any eLicenser presence in your old system?

Guys, what about the C++ Run Time. Didn't some people need to install that?

What version is the right one?

I thought it installed with X3, but could this maybe be his problem?

There is a master bus, the "none" refers to the automation lane on the master bus Craig ;).
Bus output denomination is right below, "adKntrl1".

Okay...it was hard to see on my laptop.

As far as installation my stuff is pretty light and streamlined. I will definitly look at video drivers and all with the people at ADK, but I'm afraid I already know what they'll say, it will be along the lines of "well if all applications BUT this one behaves like that, then it's that application" and franckly, that kind of logic suits me as well :/

Well, a streamlined system with an ADK laptop should be a good foundation. My laptop has an nVidia Quadro 1000KM driver and there are no graphics issues; my older laptop has a GeForce 9600M and it works fine. However I did have problems on my desktop with a particular nVidia graphics card, and ended up replacing it with an ATI.

You've probably already done this, but just in case...have you checked for updated graphics drivers? Or rolled back to older drivers? My experience with nVidia updates has not always been great...there have been a few times I've needed to roll back to a previous driver and wait for the next update.

In any event what you're experiencing is pretty bizarre. Before giving up I'd try a re-install just in case something went awry during the installation process. I've forgotten to turn off anti-virus programs sometimes and had various problems with programs that were installed while it was on.

You have a seriously good laptop. You should be able to make it work.

Call Cakewalk Support on Monday and see if you can't get it sorted out.

It's a performance issue not a crash so updating C++ won't be necessary.
Delays etc won't be down to antivirus. I do not recommend turning them off rather configuring them to exclude certain folders and processes. However you could turn it off temporily to see if it makes a difference.

> I'm using an ADK laptop ( the 8600HW, NVDIA Geforce mobile, tailored and tweaked for audio)

What is your specific graphics card? Looking it up you have nVidia GTX860/870/880 graphics card options:
You can downloading the latest graphics card drivers here:
http://www.nvidia.co.uk/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-uk

You will probably want to look into download the latest Intel software:
http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect

... and BIOS for your laptop (from ADK) if you haven't already....

Run all the Windows updates as well, check out most of the optional updates as well...

We still need to know the exact make and model of your sound interface. You should be looking at updating to the latest drivers and firmware for this device.

If the probem persists after this we would then be looking at X3. If you are going to ring up Cakewalk I would handle the above first before you ring them. I really would try ruling everything out before you contact them, they would be giving advice similar to this first time around.

(BTW it may be running well in 8.5.3 and not in X3, but this doesn't rule out anything as we are dealing with software dependencies here, therefore you are not comparing eggs with eggs. ).

Oh and rip out that dongle to see if it makes a difference.

Cheers...

How many plugins do you have installed on your system? If its moderate - 500 or so it should be fast to load the menu. I have over 1000 and there is no lag. If you have only a few plugins and are seeing lag there is most likely some performance issue with your system - disk or registry are my best guesses. Video or audio drivers are not relevant to building menus. Also plugins are not actually accessed when the menu is being built.

Are you loading a custom menu layout or the "default - all plugins" layout? Look under "Plug-in Layouts" to see which one is being loaded.
If you are loading a custom layout there is disk access to read the menu layout file. If your OS disk is slow or fragmented perhaps this might slow down the file access.
To build the menu SONAR accesses the registry. If you have a fragmented registry or some antivirus software that is intercepting every registry access this could affect the speed. Please turn off any AV software you may have to troubleshoot it.

I have no clue how many plugins I have but 500 seems a lot, I would say less than that. I am using my own custom plugin layout, but it is stored on my os disk wich is a pretty fast SSD drive, and defragged weekly. I don't know of anyway to defrag registry? please share. I do not have any anti virus running. Most of the time I'm not on the internet with this machine.

Noel's probably right on this one, he's drilling more into the specific issue than I did. From the sounds of it menu items are not cached in Sonar otherwise antivirus would not be a problem. Maybe turn off plugin autoscanning.

What I've given you in my post above should help in speed/reliability overall for your system. I still recommend it.

I have all the latest drivers from about a week ago, right before I backed up an image of the OS disk, all installed remotly by the peeps at adk (teamviewer is a godsend for that). I can try to revert to an earlier image... but only if its my last recourse :/
