I've just seen the Roland UA-33 on offer at Studiospares in the UK £82 or thereabouts.

I'm looking for a small, cheap and cheerful interface (which works ) that I can use with my laptop for simple monitoring and single channel recording. The loop back facility might also have it's uses in my video work. I don't want an all singing all dancing interface, for full blown band recording - I already have a ZED-R16 for that but it's a bit impractical lugging a 16 channel mixing desk around in a laptop bag. 


Anyone have any experience with it or any other similar alternative suggestions.

It was the list of things I considered prior to settling for a Quadcapture because it is also a midi interface. The tri-capture seems to have all the other bases covered, guitar input, phantom power, stereo line input ect. There are windows 8 drivers available. I dont think you can go far wrong at that price.

The new Duo Capture EX is an alternative, it has a MIDI interface built in but is more expensive and does not have the stereo line input. It will also work with an iPad if your that way inclined.

Thanks Glyn. I've just pulled the trigger on the UA-33 about an hour ago though as there was only one left and it was at a tad over £80 which seemed a bit of a bargain and isn't a lot to waste even if it's rubbish. 

TBH the main reason I want it is for screen capturing Sonar's output in Camtasia for video production work so the "Loop back" function was what caught my eye.
I'm getting more and more video work so it'll be nice to be able to capture when I'm away from the studio which this will allow me to do. For major recording work I have my ZED and a host of MIDI interfaces but it's not exactly easily portable.

Quick update for anyone searching for info on the Tri-capture.

Setupwas a doddle, works well although it's only possible to record two separate tracks at the same time if that's important to you.

For what I bought it for it works really well. I wanted to be able to record output of Sonar and other audio software into Camtasia for video production work. It does that really well with the loop back function.

For the money (especially the deal I got) it's a no-brainer.

Can you check the round trip latency of your Tri Capture and see if the Tri / Quad / possibly Duo shares similar performance ?

Sorry only just caught up with this thread - I'll reply in the linked thread but for anyone else searching this......

I'm running it attached to a HP Elitebook 8760W with an i7-2670QM @ 2.2 GHz and 12 GB RAM.

It goes down to 96 samples / 2.2 msecs and that gives a reported round trip time of 10.5 msecs (7.3 in & 3.2 out). Direct monitoring is possible via a switch.
