• SONAR
  • X3 track icons crumble (pixelate) (p.6)

in one of my projects, this is just part of the console view

by deleting the entire contents of the Cakewalk Icon folder and re-saving this project file, this is what is found inside the Icon folder

There's two issues in this thread.  1) redraw issues where the entire track icon isn't getting redrawn properly.  2) pixelation.

It is not weird for SONAR to save back out the track icons to an empty directory.  This is how we facilitated sharing of icons from various projects.  You can reuse track icons elsewhere.

Visually this looks to me like something resampled an image down for say 16x16 and then wound up scaling that back up before writing it to disk.  So be sure to start with a 96 x 96 image.  In the case where something is already pixelated, you'd need to replace it and resave the project.  Once the bitmap is pixelated, there's no converting back to un-pixelated.  You would have to overwrite that data.

Looking into how this could occur.  It may be an interop issue with projects from other or older versions of SONAR. We had updated the track icon code a few times adding new size definitions so that's one way I can imagine this could occur.

We'll continue after this issue as while an appearance issue like this doesn't affect the sound, it can be visually jarring.

Thanks for your support.

Thank you SOO much for jumping in, Keith.

I thought Windows had been involved in that aspect of things.

Hi Keith, thank you for looking into this. As mentioned, it doesnt affect the audio part which is the core function of Sonar...

looking forward....  Cheers!!!

I did as suggested and updated my Display Driver, but with no change to the pixilation scenario.

I’m using NVIDIA GeForce GT 520.

My previous driver was about 3 years old.

The updated driver is 337.88 for 64bit Windows desktop. Driver date May 19th 2014. File version differs depending where I look it up: in the NVIDIA info window it states version 1.0.1.0; in device manager > driver properties it states 9.18.13.3788.

A couple more observations:

Projects done in Sonar 8.5 and imported into X3 do NOT exhibit pixelated icons.

I previously stated that ALL icons except for track 1 were garbled in my tests, but I only used around 4 icons in those tests. I recently tested a project  with a larger track count (12 tracks), then it was more varied with some icons garbled, others not – but track 1 still consistently okay.

It would be nice if Jmasno5 could add a few specifics – as it was he who started this thread that has got everyone scratching their heads!

Personally I don’t want to do any more updates or upgrades of any part of my computer for a while cos it’s all I seem to be doing lately, and I always do so with great trepidation – based on past experiences.

(Edited 'cos a word kept coming up as **** and it wasn't a swear word?)

Some normal, everyday words, contain what it detects as being no-no words - offensive/racist, even though it is obvious to US that the word was not intended to be as such.

The word s u s p i c i o u s, for example, happens to contain a smaller derogatory word within it, so that is a common one that gets flagged all the time.

The forum software is just trying to keep things on an as even a keel as possible.

And as far as the icons getting pixelatedisciousified, I have gone back and looked at projects on my computer, and for whatever reason, I don't happen to see that happening - at least not in the sampling of projects I have looked at thus far.

I AM keeping an eye on things, so if I DO start having the issue I can try to post information to try to help figure out why it happens to some projects, and not in others.

There are no real specifics to add except I use a nvidia fanless graphics card that I keep updated. It's happened off and on for a couple of years back to X2.

Surprisingly, a lot of users have this minor issue and they are doing a good job offering specifics. Now that Cakewalk officially knows about it maybe they'll figure it out. My projects are relatively small in track numbers so sometimes I forgo the icons. I was just curious about my machine's performance. I'm happy to find others experience the same.

I don't know that it is a lot of users. One can't make a conclusion based on what one sees on this forum.

Even if all the posters on this thread reported this problem it still would be a tiny few compared to the vast total user base. And because it has not been mentioned before as far as I can recall I would think it really is only a very few indeed. However, I don't know how many it actually effects either.

What is the specific model please and driver version? That would be really useful information. We want to see what is in common and what needs ruling out. I'm not making any assumptions right now. You can find the details in device manager.

I would still strongly suggest updating to the drivers to the latest it will do no harm, and run windows update.
Has anybody stated that it happens in new projects?

Dear Cake Alex
As stated in last post, I tried updating drivers – directly from manufacturer sight. It didn’t make any difference. And as stated in previous posts, I have downloaded the Windows updates, and it happens in new projects (though only after saving the project and re-opening).
