I agree, new releases should be limited to when they're 100% ready. But I guess on the other hand Cakewalk is a business with investors to think of, and they have to keep up interest in the product and attract new users.

Cakewalk has the kind of people that if Gibson mandated no new development on Sonar for a year, they'd all sneak into their basements and do it on the side anyway. They all use the program and aside from the feature requests that come from the outside, there are feature requests that originate from within Cakewalk. I think Noel & company are wired to think constantly about how to improve the program, and the result manifests itself in updates. The positive reaction to X3 has only gotten them more fired up.

That said, yes, it would indeed be great to continue attracting new users. That is happening, and we'd also like to get people to switch; upgrades do get their attention. Admittedly it would be really great if everyone always had the most recent software, if only from a support standpoint. But as you can see from this forum, a lot of people are still on X1 or even 8.5 or earlier, which simply says to me those programs have what they need...and that's fine.

That's why I kind of like how it works with smartphones - you get an upgrade every couple of years or so, which forces you to be happy with the phone you have instead of having to have the latest release (unless you want to pay $700 for a phone).

I wish that was the way it worked. My Android has become essentially useless because so many apps require the latest OS. Oh well, it can still make calls.

Well the reality is all the developers need to get paid, the electric bill paid, the phone bills paid..and hopefully there's a profit leftover....this is not a non-profit company, so yes they will release new versions to pay the bills, deal with it. If everybody stops buying the upgrades, the company goes broke...(example Opcode) so support the company with your dollars and buy the upgrade if you want....I buy it whether I need it or not because it's great software, does what i want it to, and i don't want the company to go broke. I love having it on my computer because it's a great set of audio tools that i can really use....when the mood strikes, i can fly thru a project in no time, because the software is right there doing what it's supposed to.

Who said there would be an X4?

Oh yeah, Noel said that in the EZDrummer2 thread.
