Hello,

I upgraded to X3P just a couple weeks ago, still getting used to some of the new features. I used the comping feature for a lead vocal track and loved it.  Very easy to use, did three takes, and pulled the best from each for each phrase, ended up with a really nice final vocal.  I tried to use Melodyne after flattening comp, didn't work.  And I went into one of the takes and tried to use it there, that didn't work either.  So my conclusion is this, if you want to use Melodyne, you have to apply it prior to flattening.  Is that right?  (Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything here).  And...  is there any way to "unflatten" and flattened comp?  I haven't found out how to if there is.

Thanks!

Todd

You can apply melodyne after as long as you do not cut off any of your necessary breaths or ending siblances in your comping process.

or, be sure to check that the data is unlocked before you edit a flattened comp, it defaults to locking....

just a thought...

It must be the locked thing, I've so far been able to Melodyne pretty much whenever.

Thanks all! Didn't even think to try "unlocking" the flattened comp. Unlocked, and now it works fine.

Another question, about Melodyne's request for a bigger buffer. I've read different opinions on this, some report that smaller buffers are fine, others like to go to Melodyne's recommended 1024. My question is, where to set? Do I set in Sonar preferences (Audio/Sync and Caching/Play and Record IO Buffer Size)? Or, do I set in my ASIO panel? (In my system, the Saffire Mix Control Setting drop-down)

In the AISO panel.  I can't tell for sure by the way you worded it, but you can change that from within SONAR...

FWIW, I have a Scarlett 18i6 and I'm one of those that has never increased my buffers to suit Melodyne's recommendation.   I never really had a problem with it either, in both X3 and in Studio One before (where I originally used ARA).

Thanks stevec, I had asked the question because I changed the buffers in Sonar and they did not show up as changed in the ASIO panel.  I may only (temporarily) increase if I am processing an entire vocal track, as opposed to just a measure or two.

I'm pretty certain you should ignore melodynes increase buffers nag unless you experience issues.

I think what happened was that celomony got so fed up with people logging support calls that could be resolved by adjusting buffer sizes that one day they flipped and said... Right! everybody is gonna get the same ruddy advice and that will shut them up.
