hi everyone, i'm about to order X-3, the download and the disks. I need to know if the interface I have that works fine with X-2 will work with the upgrade.
what I have is...M-AUDIO MOBLE PRE
can anyone get back to me. also, what would be some suggestions for a interface. all I ever need is 2 ins and 2 outs

It should work. Most people on here really dig the Focusrite Scarlett series of interfaces. They come in lots of different sizes, eg the 2i2, 2i4 and 2i6 to name a few of the smaller ones.

It should work but make sure you are on the latest drivers, use the 64 bit version, I believe they got taken over by Avid:

I think these are the right drivers (above), otherwise you are looking at these far older ones:

I agree with what Sanderxpander says....

Cheers...

I have a Mobile Pre which worked mostly OK with X2. Occasional audio dropouts was something I never seemed to iron out. So I bought a Mackie Onyx, which was great, until I switched to X3/WIN8 (I was on WIN7), and I had major problems. It just refused to work sometimes and X3 wouldn't even see it. So I followed suit, mostly based upon info from this forum, and got a Scarlet 2i2, which has been almost faultless. I have just purchased a Scarlet 8i6 for some extra inputs. Couldn't be happier.

Try your Mobile Pre first if you don't plan on changing from win7. If not, I too highly recommend the Scarlett range.

Ditto on the Focusrite stuff...they have had their s**t together for awhile. I'm still using a Firewire Saffire Pro 40 that I have had since Windows 2001; before that I had an M-Audio Audiophile USB box that was always flaky. Always been flawless. It's worth moving to an interface that uses ASIO...latency and reliability are much better.

Quick question for you Scarlett users: is the only significant difference between the 2i4 and the 6i6 the number of inputs, or are the preamps of better quality?

I think the preamps are the same… and very good.  This seems like a commercial for Focusrite, but I also LOVE my Scarlett 2i2.

Hmm if they're the same then I might just go for the 2i2. I never record more than 2 things at once....

I would think if you are having dropouts and/or crackles and such, that these would be usually due to parameter values for things like ASIO Buffer Size, Driver Mode, Sample Rate, and Record Bit-Depth.

So after you get everything up and running, please post your values for all of the above, for Sonar, and for the audio interface, along with the Sonar-reported Latency values.

I usually recommend settings of: Audio interface - ASIO Buffer Size of 128, Sample Rate of 48 k, for Sonar: Sample Rate of 48 k, Driver Mode of ASIO, Record Bit-Depth of 24 bits.

The above settings are what I recommend as a starting point for recording.  For Mixing, I suggest jacking the ASIO Buffer Size up to as high as 1024, which will allow more robust effects like Perfect Space or Boost 11 to have enough room to do what they do.  Then, for the rest of time, you will switch ASIO Buffer Size back and forth - low for recording, and high for mixing/mastering.  It's just the way it is.

If you can go the long dollar, get the Focusrite Forte....
It has the RedNet preamps in it...which are a big step
up from the Scarlett Series...
