It's a small thing, but does anyone else wish that adding a volume automation envelope worked differently?

I get my fader about where I want it, and then I use the drop-down in the track view to change from CLIPS to AUTOMATION | VOLUME.  This creates a volume envelope.  So far, so good.  The problem is that Sonar puts a node at the first of the song and at the end.  I always have to scroll to the end and cut the last node.  Why?  Because as I mix, I will be adjusting the level of each track up or down—but when I don't, I do get a clean change: I get a sloping envelope from the start to the end.

EXAMPLE:  I think the bass should be at about -4.  I create and envelope and there is a -4 node at the start and end.  BUT if I decide the bass should be at -3, I can't just change the node at the first: I have to change both.  If I just change the first node, the colume will gradually be decreasing from -3 to -4 over the course of the song.

So, I always end up creating an envelope, then scrolling to the end and razor-blading the node at the end.  I want Sonar to put nodes where I put them and not help me by adding extras.

This is a small thing, but it affects workflow.  Anyone else agree?

In X1, to change both nodes at once hold the SHIFT key and drag the envelop.

Also I would not bother to use automation for that. When I use automation I use it for adjusting volume throughout the track. Not the whole track set to a single volume. And I use a control surface to do the rough pass. For your use simply lower or raise the fader. Set it to where you want it. You may make adjustments to it but they shouldn't be recorded.

Hey, John.  I understand and thanks, but, this is how I set the initial volume; then I add nodes where I need increases and decreases but I always want a baseline.  Also, even if the volume does not change, I still create a node because it is too easy to move a fader unintentionally (hardware or software).

I generally make all the movements in the track automation and then use bus automation to correct overall levels slightly.

You can also easily select the entire lane by clicking jn the top left of the lane header, then if you hover on the top part of the lane, you can drag increase/decrease the envelope along the entire length. Also useful for adjusting the overall volume of an already automated track.

X1 does have lanes.

I think it's actually CTRL, not shift. But yes, that's the way to change an entire section of envelope.

This is one of my favorite automation shortcuts, I use it all the time.

When I tried it before posting, SHIFT worked for me where CTRL did not in X1. I also found CTRL worked in X3 and SHIFT did not. Maybe I did something wrong in X1.

Ah right. Yeah, a bunch of stuff changed around X2 time with key modifiers and so on. I remember being a bit thrown by it at first.

But the main point is right; there is a way to do what Konrad wants, and while it's not immediately obvious, it's nice and easy once you know how.

EDIT: it's coming back to me now. I think in X1 you could just grab an automation line and drag it up and down. Then in X2 and X3, clicking an automation line was changed to "add node" and you have to hold a modifier key to get the old drag behaviour.
