  • How can I record Audio AND Vision from my Sonar X1?

I have Sonar X1 Studio (X1c build 319) – X 64 and an Edirol UA-4FX interface (no longer made) which rest within my Acer Aspire (All in one PC) Z 5610 with a Realtek HD Audio sound card. OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Edition.

The interface acts as an Audio / Midi input and output. When I playback my work from Sonar it goes through the interface and I listen through headphone connected to the interface. I have never been able to get Sonar to recognise the PC’s sound card and playback through my PC’s speakers.

I am an amateur, hobbyist messing around with Sonar for nearly 3 years. Sometimes it drives me mad but I have got to the stage where I can produce simple compositions, and use software synthesisers.

Users of this Forum will realise that using the staff view on Sonar will display the musical notation of the track viewed. It will also allow me to put lyrics and chords onto the manuscript. When the track is played the time line will follow the notation, lyrics and chords (much like the bouncing ball concept) making it easy to play along with on a guitar (or any other instrument).

What I have been trying to do is record the staff view to produce a video of the music notation and lyrics of various songs for demonstration purposes.

I have tried two Screen Capture programs, being: (1) Microsoft Windows Expression Encoder 4 Capture and (2) BB Express FlahBack Recorder. Both of these captured the video in vision but with no sound.

I suspect the reason for this is related to me using an ASIO driver with the interface. Perhaps the Realtek sound card does not respond to ASIO. (To be truthful I don’t fully understand the concept but I’m sure there must be someone out there who can help).

Perhaps someone who uses Sonar X1 has tried to do what I am doing and has been successful.
Perhaps someone who has a similar set up to me could try it on their system and see if it works.

Can anyone help please?

How can I record Audio AND Vision from my Sonar X1?

1.) You should not use the internal sound chip in your PC (realtec). It has no ASIO drivers. It really has no decent drivers written for audio recording and your performance in sonar and your PC will suffer. so look into getting a decent sound card/interface. MOTU, ECHO, M-Audio and focusrite are all good cards.

2.) Sonar is not a Video recorder. You cannot record and edit video in sonar. It never stated it could, so i do not know why you think it can. It can only playback video that was recorded and edited in another program.

Hi Cj

Look at it like this - You know that you can take screen prints from your PC.

You know that the staff view enables you to see a moving screen displaying the notation, lyrics and chords.

Microsoft Windows Expression Encoder 4 Capture and BB Express FlashBack Recorder are programs that capture a moving screen shot. The resultant capture can then be converted to a video.  These "capture" programs work on moving images and sounds when the sounds are through the PC speakers but do not appear to capture the sound when it is through an interface.

I don't suggest that Sonar is a video recorder. Sonar is producing the images and the sound.  Why will the Capture programs only capture the images and not the sound when the sound is through an ASIO interface? Is there a way to remedy this? That is what I need to know.

I hope this makes my problem clearer.

I am the worlds last one to understand video, but I see what you are trying to do and also why the capture program s not receiving the audio. You are correct that it probably is looking to use the sound from your Realtech.
Three  solutions I can think of

1- Simply record the screen capture without audio and then add the audio in another video program,,, I think even Windows Movie maker will work.
2- Bring the screen capture video back into the same Sonar project as a video. This may require converting it to Quick Time.

3- Switch to MME driver mode and Sonar should recognize the Realtech Audio .
You may have to go into the Windows control panel and make it the default audio device.
Make sure to unplug the Edirol.

So, why wouldn't you record the video using one of those programs and then render your audio to a file and use VIDEO editor software to sync them up. I know that iMOVIE can do this as well as Photoshop Elelments.  I can only imagine that there are many software programs to put audio together with Video...... wait a minute, can't SONAR already do that?

i did this years ago, by using a patch cord to loop the output back into the audio device. not sure if you can do this with an onboard sound card. there may be software that can do that now...

There's your answer, Alan - I was ready to offer the same info if someone else didn't post it.

You've gotten good feedback on this thread - You don't want to use both your interface and your computer's sound card.  No need to struggle trying to get Sonar to play through your sound card - You've chosen the external interface for audio, as you should.  If you patch cords from your interface's out into the ins of an amplifier, then you'll get sound on your speakers and won't be limited to only headphones.

To use a video capture program for recording what you're doing in Sonar, just as dlion16 said, you need to loop the output back into the ins of the audio device - The cords mentioned in paragraph 2 above are temporarily taken out, put another pair going from the interface outs back into the ins.  WATCH OUT - you'll need to start with low levels, experimenting with how high your level can be before you get feedback.

Doing that will let you record audio as you do a screen capture of the Staff View, or any view you want in Sonar.

As noted, Sonar's not a video editing program, but you Can do video captures with sound, like you've undoubtedly seen in video tutorials.  That's how they do it.  - Post-recording a sound track works too, but it's a lot more hassle.

I've used Cam Studio, and it has options to record from either the sound device or from a microphone.

Sure, it can accept any audio input you set up - But on a computer set up for music production, why would a microphone be plugged in anywhere but the audio interface-?

Oops. That's microphone or speakers.
I'll have to check the recording computer to see which I have selected (this computer has a stock RealTek box).
