Hey Fellow Cakies

Problem- Sonar X3e Win7 64, open project then try to save it, sometimes it saves no problem, often it crashes and all work is lost. Happens on any project.  If it initially saves it will continue to save correctly.  Uninstall and reinstall of X3 did not correct.   Thought I would post this before I try a complete reformat of the computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Pretty hard to say when we don't know what your project contain but I've experienced a similar behavior.

Save-Hang-Crash-Project corrupted

I'm still not sure what happenned but it seem ok for some months in my case.

I would start by deleting everything in the Picture Cache folder.

To know where it is go there:

Preference - File - Audio Data - Image folder

You can also delete the aud file (save of copy of it before doing so just in case)

C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\SONAR X3 Producer

Both are safe to delete since Sonar will rebuilt them.

Then try to lauch Sonar holding the "shift" key on the keyboard.

Maybe it will help

If you remove a version of Sonar, you have additional items you must manually delete.

These include a couple of registry keys and some hidden folders.

Exclude your antivirus from Sonar file paths and project file paths.
Cheers.

I just experienced this last week.
In my case, it seems to have been caused by allowing the computer to go to sleep while Sonar was running.
The fault was at a program level, and affected all projects after the program (X3) woke up.
I set Windows to never go to sleep, and did a cold restart.
The problem has not returned (knocking on wood).
Hopefully, this is your problem, as it's an easy fix.

The issue is happening with the OP when saving. Please be aware that saving is specifically an operating system funtion .

Sonar DOES get wigged out when it goes to sleep and wakes up again.  Also, it loses track of USB-connected devices when they get selectively suspended by Windows.

And, those 'green' drives that spin at multiple rates also can cause problems.

I hope that addressing the settings to eliminate any issues from the above takes care of your problems.  Those settings are in Power Management setting - and some might be under Advanced settings, within there, as well.

Good luck,

I've not had this problem in a long while, but whenever I have, Auto-Save and Versioning have jointly saved me.

Does this happen when you try and save an empty project or a project with just unedited waves?
Do you ever have a problem with your PC when you save anything else in any other program like a text editor or photo program?
Does it happen with other song files?

Do these steps one at a time not all at once so you will know which one fixes it..

Do you have melodyne on any waves in your project? If so try rendering them "all" down or disable melodyne in the menu and try saving then.

What instruments specifically are in the project you are trying to save?

Try moving your Cakewalk projects folder to another drive if you have it.

Have you added any third party VST's if so try disabling them or move them temporarily to another folder out of your VST folders.
