Let's see if this works...

Nope, no joy. Was hoping to put up a pic.

In any event it's straightforward:
Keybd to USB junction box to M-Audio M Track interface and to a USB port in the computer.
The monitors also plug into the M-Audio box.
The flow for the keybd is one way, towards the computer.
Same goes for the monitors I guess. They are hooked into the M-Audio and then accessible from the computer and the DAW.

Im pretty sure Bristol wants you to be specific about your signal chain. You have not listed any MIDI channels and inputs for your midi and audio tracks. your MIDI set up in the Sonar Preferences.

This all needs to be listed by you. Be very specific and leave out saying 'The flow for the keybd is one way, towards the computer." as thats doesn't tell us anything. You problem is user error, o if you tell us everything about your signal chain, we can tell you what you did wrong.

You need to insert a soft synth ,, you don't need to use the lame sounds of a Yamaha keyboard. Sonar comes with some very advanced midi sound modules. Most everyone new to DAW's goes through this Duhh, why didn't I see that faze. So go insert a soft synth,  you'll see what we are talking about then.

You can use your outboard sounds but that's actually more of a pain in the butt because it involves both midi and an audio connection. Then it involves things like local on/off and selecting channels.

So If your set up is recording MIDI you are half way there. That part is good. Now just insert a soft synth and assign the midi track you recorded's output to the soft synth.
If you can't figure out how to insert a soft synth after reading the help file topic, then ask and we'll guide you.

Fair enough but it will wait till morning now. I at least recovered the ability to play midi instruments. Somewhere in the Sonar help files or on a forum like this one I read that I needed to check off the 'First Synth Audio Input' box when inserting a midi track. I went back to checking off the 'Simple Audio Instrument' box et voila!
If I do not discover what I have done wrong in order to not be hearing midi output I will get back on in the AM and try to give a more specific picture of the signal chain.
There are actually newbies like me out here who need to have this spelled out when we reach out to you. Ummm it would be for the same reason that we are reaching out. We don't know what we are doing. It's not like I don't know it's user error...just saying.
I'm doing my best here and I genuinely appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks,
D

I actually use soft synths Cactus Music. The Yamaha is merely a midi trigger in this instance. It's the soft synths I put up last night that I could not hear today. I am pretty sure it is something I have done (or undone), some puny little virtual switch or action.
In any event I will try again in the AM and if I have no luck I will attempt to put together a more specific signal chain.

Thanks,

I suggest getting a crash course in ASIO settings and try changing the latency settings. As a song grows the computer becomes more finicky about playing with certain latency settings. If nothing else has changed other than the song growing in tracks that is probably your problem. :)
