  • sfz+ player; "synth not properly installed" - dyad, 32 bit, 64 bit - lots of stuff!

well I guess I've got 64/32 bit troubles; I wanted to use old sf2s, which I used to use with the dyad player; I'm now in Sonar X2 64 bit; installed the dyad and some other stuff  - they are on my menu but won't open, say "failed to insert soft synth, synth may not be properly installed" - I've seen some posts here that say it's an administrator issue but that's not working for me; I also downloaded the sf2+ pro player people have mentioned here but that too shows up in the softsynth menu but won't open with the same message; I have tried installing as administrator - is it a 32 v 64 bit issue?  Is the dyad player useless in X2?  I want to use the new stuff, but I'd still like to have the old stuff - I have seen some posts about converting sf2s to sfz - but I still wish I had the option to use sf2s and the dyad player - any info is appreciated.  I've got windows 7 by the way.

Try running X2 as administrator.

That stuff is getting pretty old. IIRC Dyad was a 32 bit DXI so it won't run in 64 bit Sonar, there may be a solution using a wrapper but it will be messy. Your post reminded me I have it somewhere but have not had it installed since going 64 bit way back when Sonar 8.5 was released. It may be worth recovering the Soundfonts to see if there is anything I might find useful.

sfz+ should work, (as scook said, try running Sonar as administrator) but I have found it to be temperamental, did you install it or just copy the ddl. I recommend running the install and making sure you are installing a VSTi not a DXi

If I use Soundfonts these days I play them in Kontakt.

If you want a full featured, 64 bit, free player for Soundfont in SF2 format try this one http://www.tx16wx.com/

You could also try Sforzando http://www.kvraudio.com/product/sforzando-by-plogue/details - Plogue's web site seems to be down at the moment.

how would I do that - I know basically about having administrator rights, but don't know how to do it specifically where X2 is administrator - thanks for help.

Right-click on the X2 icon,
Click on Properties in the popup menu
Click on the Compatibility tab
Click on "Run this program as an administrator"

This will solve some issues with older VST and 64bit DXi plug-ins generating "not properly installed" error messages.

As Glyn points out, 32bit DXi plug-ins do not run in 64bit SONAR. This means Dyad will not work in 64bit SONAR. If you want to use 32bit DXi plug-ins the best solution is run 32bit X2. Both 32 and 64bit versions of SONAR may be installed on the same machine.

thanks to all - does anybody notice a big difference between 64 bit or 32 bit versions of Sonar?

Depends what you are doing, but I use a lot of big Kontakt libraries, Superior Drummer and BFD3, the extra RAM the 64 bit version can access makes a big difference to me. I don't think the 32 bit version would handle what I do.

Freddy, where are you?

thanks Glynn, great information - I'll try the soundfont player you mentioned - I guess I'm a primitive - do we have Kontakt with sonar or do I have to get that someplace?

got the sf2+ player to work - I moved it to the vstplugins folder (wasn't automatically installing there) - and it works!

Kontakt is a native instruments product, not cheap but very powerful with extensive third party content available, ranging from free to several hundered dollars.http://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/samplers/kontakt-5/

There is a free player version but it only plays libraries made for the player. All other things, including your soundfonts will run in demo mode and it will time out after 15 mins.
