This was a beast to mix. Looking for feedback on balance. I'm not likely to make any compositional changes at this late stage, but if something's out of whack or an instrument sounds out of place or something, please let me know. Thanks!

Well that was certainly unlike anything I've heard here before..in a good way. Very cool track, like a jazz version of They Might Be Giants! 'a beast to mix'..I'm thinking more of a beast to sing.

Mix sounded pretty darn good to me, the only thing that occurred was the marimba (or glock?) was a little thin sounding (at 1:35), but it's really a minor nitpick, and possibly because the piano sounds so good.

Excellent stuff, very creative.

Oh I see what you mean. I brought up the piano in that bridge at the last minute, and now the other half of the back and forth thing does sound thin. It's a xylophone, with a flute and clarinet in unison. It's thin, you're right, thanks!

Yeah, that was different....  I thought it was really well done!  Great piece all around, everything sounds really good here.

And if not Jazzy TMBG, then perhaps School House Rock on 'roids.

Hey Jim of Seattle,

Nice Freakin' Job!

I'd just bring the vocal up a little in the faster passages. With the speed of your lyrics, the vocal seems to bury itself deeper in the mix. It's a weird phenomenon that I just invented - but Mariners know it as "squat" and I think it's happening in your mix.

again, way to be creative. Very inspirational.

cheers,
-Tom

Thanks for the comments everyone. I'll pay some close attention to the lead vocal levels. I'm already riding it a lot with an envelope, but I probably missed a few spots, or else maybe the whole thing should come up. I'm also going to replace my snare for something sharper, and redo the FX on my BG vocs so that they stand out better. Thanks again!

I did not read any previous comments...

Very nicely mixed and I'm sure it's very clever but I couldn't understand what was being sung. For a song like this to work, the lyrics need to be clearly enunciated and mixed in a way that the vocal stands out from the mix.  Unfortunately, this was difficult for me to make out the lyric content (as far as I know, I don't have any hearing impediments).

This all adds up to one very interesting tune. Vocals (as mentioned) could come up a bit - I also had a problem catching every word. Love the wacky timing and crazy swing. Great job.

No comments other than the "glock" sound jumps out at me a bit high end harsh.  Other than that, I think you got this one nailed down.  Yes - I'm sure that was a real treat to mix - Nice work.
