I have recently just moved over from Cubase to Sonar X1 Producer. I am currently working with orchestra libraries and am trying to figure out how I can create smooth curves within my CC data ie Mod Wheel for my dynamics. In Cubase you were able to draw steep curves and smooth transitions by just drawing in the lines with a parabola tool- it seems I have ignorantly assumed that this would be the case in most DAW's. I do use my mod wheel but it often needs a little tweaking. Does anyone have any answers to this problem? I'm really struggling to have any real control over this data.

Cheers.

im not to great on this subject but i think you need to assign a controler to your keyboard, this is done in the piano roll view under controlers.
i wish i could help you more on this but hopefully this will give you a bump.

You can draw freehand data on the controls with the smart tool using CTRL+ALT+[draw], the draw tool also seems to have different shapes such as line and sine but I'm not too familiar with those. For really smooth figures you'll need to disable Snap to Grid.

I wonder if snapping can be disabled for MIDI data separately, and if not, if there's a simple shortcut for turning snap on and off?

I as well am new but I seem to recall in the webinars when Brandon does his fancy mod wheel (well not mod wheel... it's a hand wavy thingy) it shows the automation in a separate display which I'm assuming you can draw edits into. You can see that video here... http://www.youtube.com/wa...vmshs&feature=youtu.be

Don't suppose you know where in the Video - it's like over an hour and a half long.

Sorry I don't actually. It's later on just after he has finished recording his track and he's showing the onscreen results. I just looked at my open X1 project though. At the top of the track view thing where it has your tracks listed click the dropdown (it will be labeled either All, Custom, Mix, FX or I/O). Select "Mix". Then on the track you want to mess with there will be another dropdown that says "Clips". Click that, hover over "Automation". There you will see various automation options and when you select them it will display what's happening automation wise on the track. Maybe that is what you are looking for and I think you can draw within it. Cheers!

Hey, no worries. The OP's dilemna is that (to the best of my knowledge - I need to go digging...) they have done away with certain tools that are in Cubase but -used- to be in older versions Sonar and Cakewalk Pro Audio. Tools that allowed entry of CC data like a line tool etc. "Drawing" is ok but with line tools and curve tools etc. it was easier and quicker to add and tweak data. Of course I have 8.5.3 not X1 so there may be differences. If the tools are still there then they are not as obvious or accessible as they used to be. Oh well, still catching up on the new features so I'm likely missing something.

Seriously check what I described. I think you can control all that MIDI automation stuff in that track automation view. I haven't tried yet though but I think that is what Brandon showed in the webinar. BTW thanks for the extra advice in my silly fiddle faddle thread. Forgot about that one. I'm gonna update that later tonight. Right now I'm wrestling with Guitar Rig. Woof... it did something mean to me. It's a big meanie.

The issue isn't "where" the CC data is entered, it's "what tools" are available to enter said data. I am gonna spend some time later and see if the track automation view offers different tools than the PRV.
