I usually shy away from having folks wanting to come to my studio to do one off covers, but I had a feeling she could sing. This is my wife's cousin Jennah doing the Peggy Lee song.

You were right Randy, she has a really nice voice. Always liked this song, really cool and minimal arrangement compared to most other songs in the era. I imagine this isn't an easy song to pull off and stay in key with just that stand-up bass, but she nailed it.

Very nice sounding vocal track, care to share mic details & stuff?

Thanks James,

I made a click track by looping the finger snaps I recorded and treated. I sent that to a local friend who plays upright in a jazz trio. He recorded his bass at his place, so I don't really know what he used. I didn't really do much to his track other than some light compression. The little tom hits were done by me using my Roland TD 8 thru AD drums and treated with reverb and some weird EQ'ing to get them to sound vintage like the original.

As for the vocal, Jennah had never been in front of a mic before. Like most car, shower, around the house singers, she had timing, key and breath issues. I told her upfront that I wouldn't be doing in "magic" on her voice, ie autotuning.

After she took a few practice runs, I played her back the track. That's when she realized work needed to be done to get it right. A 3 minute song took just short of 3 hours including a couple of breaks. There are alot of punch ins on the last half of the vocal due to timing, key and phrasing issues, but she hung in there like a champ.

Vocal was recorded thru my AKG C414 with a Neve sim preamp. The only post production was putting the Chris Lord Alge vocal plug on the track and tweaking it a little with the EQ.

She has a little bit of a nasal quality to her voice, so I raised the mic up about 4-6 inches from her mouth to make her sing upward which remedied the nasality  and required her to open her throat a little.

Nice!   The vocal track sounds clear with a nice retro vibe, and does the overall mix.   Great use of space on a sparse mix.

Well done.

A good singer doesn't need a full band and this proves it....   Bass and finger snaps and a few tasty drum fills....

What's not to like about that?
