Having random "Fatal errors", often.
Requires reboot, sometimes the project is saved, sometimes only the auto-save is saving the work.
Considering to change to X2. Need an opinion if I would be better off if I change or not.
My work is in MIDI, and only when MIDI file is mixed I bounce to audio, re-mix and export. In Midi I archive all tracks not in use to reduce CPU load.
(W7/64, Lenovo laptop, Lexicon Alpha, M-audio Keystation 61,SonarX1 Studio,VST: Aria and Gigaplayer)
Thanks in advance

What are your fatal errors. most likely these errors are form your P and not sonar. so i would fix your 'Fatal errors' before doing anything else.

If you love Layers, and haven't tried out X2's Take Lanes, you may want to get those under your belt first. Install the X2 demo alongside X1d, and see if you can "take" Lanes vs. Layers. Other than that, I believe X2a can basically mimic X1 well (with bug fixes and a few enhancements), if you choose the X1 Light color scheme.

X2 has Console Emulation which you may dig. That, and the fact that I can add an FX bin in the Pro-Channel to see 6 vs. 4 plug-ins at once in my FX bin are the two reasons I upgraded to X2.

To me, X2a is no better than X1d performance-wise, but I upgraded anyway because of the price. Otherwise, I found no absolute need to do so. If you can get X2 for such a cheap price, I'd do it in the hopes that X3 will be discounted more for you.

But check it out. You should be in good shape unless you are doing things that crash X2, which some do. If you use Waves plug-ins, ensure that if you use 64-Bit X2, that it cannot find your 32-bit Waves plug-ins. Waves Support can help here.

Are you on the latest version of X1?

Also, do your sample rates match between Sonar and your interface?

And, if your interface uses a USB connection, are you plugged into a USB 2 port, or a USB 3 port?

Do you have your driver mode set to ASIO in Sonar?

And, I had a stable system running X1d, but am now running X2a also with no issues.

Most of the time, unless it is a sample mismatch or a USB 3 port issue, most problems with crashes seem to involve one or more 32-bit plugins not playing nicely in a 64-bit install of Sonar.  That seems to occur whether it's X1 or X2.

If you are able to routinely crash Sonar on a given project, would you please list the plugins you are using for that particular project, and also would you list whether or not you are running 32 or 64-bit Sonar?

Thanks,

this is the best path.. if you are on X1c or X1d then it really should be pretty stable...

So, get your machine stable first, but X2 is a solid upgrade.. take lanes alone made it worth it for me.

Thanks all of you, from Platinum to Bronze.
Since Bob asked most questions, I answer him, but learned from all of you.
Running X-1d,sample rates 24-bits 44.1,interface on USB2, ASIO, The plug ins are Gigaplayer 64, and Aria 64 , Sonar is 64-bits.
I have tried with Tech Service to cure my "fatal" problem, they could not help, even after sending them a few crush-reports, I had to give up hope with them. I agree with CJ, I should get this fixed first, but have no idea what to do.
Thanks again, all of you, very kind ...

PS: Mystic38, you must be a sailor, lucky you, I had to give up after sailing for 79 years: Snipe, Pirate,Star,Hughes 24, Grampion 26.  Have a nice wind always! Thanks!

@tedvanya - thanks for the reply.  I wanted to make sure the easy stuff was not an issue.

The Aria software I was able to lookup, and verified it believes it can run just fine in a 64-bit environment.

Can you post a link to the Gigaplayer software you are using?

Also, is your Windows installation up to current patch maintenance levels?

And, do you happen to have antivirus software running on this computer at the same time you are running Sonar?  If so, which software is it, and have you tried temporarily disabling it for audio processing sessions using Sonar?

Lastly, please try loading and running this project without those plugins, by first creating a backup of the Cakewalk project file (or the whole folder if you would rather).  You can load the project in safe mode in Sonar, and tell it not to load any of the plugins, just as a test to see if things work OK without them.

If the above test works, even though it obviously is crippling to the project, it does serve a purpose, in that it tells you that one or more of the plugins (either effects or instruments) is causing your troubles, and is not a problem with the base Sonar install.

In any case, please post back the results and I will try to assist further.

Thanks,

Bob Bone

Everyone has already chimed in with helpful posts, so I'll just say that I prefer the smell of X2 over X1!

Its also worth checking the windows logs for any more info on a crash report if its something Windows based.....

What version of Windows are you running?

To check the windows logs go to... (for Win 7 or Vista) Right click on my computer and go to MANAGE...then click on EVENT VIEWER...Then WINDOWS LOGS..THEN SYSTEM or SOFTWARE and check if any of the logs are flagged up in red.

Windows 8 - Right Click on Start (bottom left corner of the screen) then COMPUTER MANAGEMENT and then follow the above steps from Even Viewer.

If you get any Windows errors, report back here and I may be able to help.
