I was interested in this about 2 years ago when they "pre" announced it. Now that it is out I am less excited. I don't know if I care enough about having a locker full of virtual mics. I am more interested now in just making music with the equipment that I currently have.

Slate says a 2 channel is coming. Well. Maybe.

Hey! What's with all the bellyaching over something so freakin' kewl and rad and revolutionary as VRS? Don't you dudes get it? Mastering-quality AD/DA. Eight clean preamps, with emulations of vintage pres. Extremely low latency. Two high-quality headphone amps. And the best part: only $2K for the box, another few hundred for a virtual locker full of all the classic mics you've ever dreamed of. What's the problem? Have you priced gear of equivalent quality lately? Come on, people. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE. YOU WILL BOW DOWN BEFORE THE GOD OF AUDIO AND PROCLAIM HIS GENIUS AND GENEROSITY.

Well, seriously, it is pretty cool. When it eventually hits the street it'll be the most disruptive thing in quite some time.

Cheers,
Eddie

Yea IF you run a PC based on PCIe architecture(which he pointed out if you run a TOWER should be no problem)

I beg to differ about disruptive however its still the same old can software emulate hardware debate especially with a microphone, electrons are one thing, moving air is another

I thought this to be VERY interesting. Nothing I will ever use, but I can appreciate the tech. I would like to see if in the future they would use this technology to invent brand new, never before heard, fresh, modern, amazing, futuristic sounding recordings that sparks new creativity and let genres evolve into new territory before everyone starts using it and it completely looses its value but it will be remembered as something that changed music forever...

Man, I wish I was Cher when someone screwed up the Autotune settings in 1998 and created "Believe"...

Stuff that can be purchased only by the elite? That's like some musician or pro athlete talking about "the rich people".
I'm not "elite enough" to get any of this. Must be talking about the other elite people.

I left my thoughtd on this over in another thread ... on this bl**dy phone i can't get to the permalink so pls apologise if just copy it here...

To me it resembles another version of the emperor's new clothes... Slate seems to be a brilliant salesman but to me this is too virtual ... virtually everything is virtual, and starting from mics this adds up to too much of it for my liking...

As regards latency he's not telling the full truth. There are other companies which offer super low latency via usb3.1/thunderbolt on windows (e.g. MOTU) whether they can go as low his claimed 0.7ms @96kHz I can't tell but in the price bracket Slate is playing, he has got some serious competition... if MOTU was to add a PCIe to AVB lan card, they would duplicate his system ...

As regards latency once more he's not telling the truth again because all these emulation that he needs on top of his base line mics will eat CPU ... and soon the user will have to crank up some buffer this increasing latency ...

As regards chaining devices Slate goes for Thunderbolt where cables are short and expensive while the rest of the world goes LAN (AVB or Dante) where cables are cheap and often already installed ...

As regards his base line mics plus emu philosophy ... well, go and ask Roland uses who got burnt with products that only work with one brand (me included) who will tell you to stay clear from anything that cannot be used with another system ... think long term support... think selling this later... nightmare

This video was interesting to watch. But I'm out ... it's up to you if you go all in
