For the SM7 was it flat or did you adjust the switches for the bass roll-off and mid boost?

It's nice you cut through the hype and cork-sniffing and just say "here's what they sound like, make up your own mind."

I believe Michael Jackson used an SM7 for the Thriller album - I heard that is was fairly successful :)

Of course, different singers excel on different mics.  And the pres can make a difference as well, etc. etc. etc.

Thanks Dan for this comparison.
it reinforced me to buy the sennheiser md 421 as another
option for amp recording,
cause it also sounds  very good as voc mic .

I've ALWAYS been a fan of the MD-421.  I bought one to use with my Tascam 4-track back in the early '80's.  I thought it shined brightly on these recordings.  There aint no bad mic's in the group but I really dig what that mic does.  ...in fact, my goal is to get about 8 of them and use them exclusively to mic a band....

I use the ECM87 on all my vocals going through a Presonus Eureka. i use a decent amount of compression on the way in simply because I love the sound, plus the dynamic control SWEET SOUNDING VOCALS on everyone I record.

Short list of singers I have recorded who all loved it:
Leona Lewis
DEV
Tamra Keenan
Shifty Shellshock (Crazy Town)
DJ Poet
ZupaNova (me and the other singers in my band)
Planet Asia
apl.de.ap of BEP
Jessica Sanchez
Metro Station
Holly from Hollywood Kill
And many more-

Here is my bands EP, all vocals done using this Gauge Mic.

Also, while you're at it, feel free to check out our video shot at a club in Hollywood on an Alexa camera! This song was a collaboration with Grammy award winning DJ Poet who was a producer on Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" and many others on their records.

Cheers!

Thanks, enjoyed it. Loved the MA 200, little too much for my budget. Just did a shoot-out with a vintage U87 and an MJE MOD Rode NT1a last week, these are fun to do.

I got the Michael Joly modded NT1 also. What a huge difference.
No more harsh high end. Just a smooth top end and more open sound.

Living in Nashville, I managed to rent a few vintage mics that noted some experimentation. You may find this worth a read. I still have samples, but I may have to package them up and send them via Gobbler or Dropbox to folks. No guarantees, yet. But hopefully my descriptions will give some decent insight.
