Hi, Keni. Glad you are at least mostly in a better place with the software now.

I know perhaps you don't want to hear another of my ever optimistic views that likely don't take your specific workflow into consideration but...

I keep seeing you refer to Zoom issues which for the most part seems to be the major complaint at this point now that you've made a reasonable peace with Take Lanes. Could you describe how you are zooming and/or how you expect zoom to work?

I am unsure whether this is a height or timeline zoom issue but I am assuming you are heavily using keybindings for zooming either way.

If it's timeline zooming though, (and I briefly mentioned this in one of your previous threads but didn't go into detail because there were other problems bothering you more AFAICT) I really think adding the click/drag timeline zooming feature into your workflow. I know in many ways a keyboard oriented workflow is optimal (and I myself try to use as many shortcuts for general functions as possible) but to me just reaching up to the time ruler and dragging up/down to zoom and left/right to navigate (at the same time no less) was a MAJOR boon to how I work. It is a million times easier and was one of the big selling points for X2 for me. I have never experienced any kind of bugs or quirks with it either even when I was pulling my hair out over other problems in X2. Awesome feature and only requires that you break one workflow habit (which admittedly can be difficult but in this case is a huge time save).

If however this is a vertical zoom issue I would like to explore it myself. I have been having an issue with jumping screens so perhaps that is the problem. If so I have some possible insights that might help you at least anticipate the behavior so you can avoid them or mitigate them. If it is the same issue I also posted a thread about them recently that drew the attention of at least one baker who confirmed it as did other users. I don't expect another patch for X3 at this point but X4 (or whatever they decide to name it) is right around the corner and honestly I think under the new management and the renewed enthusiasm we've seen from the Bakers it should be a good release.

Hope you've been well. Cheers.

Thanks Beepster...

This is specifically targeted at the use of holding the Z key and click-dragging an area to display only that area filling the screen.

I use all the various zooming tools as they appear to be the best method for me at the time and situation. Using the click-drag method has previously been the fastest route to what I need. It now NLT works in very limited situations. Every other method takes more time, clicks, drags and frustration where the dragging got me directly there.

Then there's the other issue with it when twrong within Lanes... That apparently works as intended, but is useless to me as it is... LANs can't get small enough or large enough to accommodate my needs and the way it sooks the track more than the lanes so much of the time leaves me clicking and dragging "manually" from different places to accomplish the zoom I need... I don't ever really get the zoom I want for a Lane even with all the needed moves to get there... For me this zoom method (click-drag) should fill the screen with NLT the selected area whether it's a Lane or a Track...

The primary "bug" is something needing fixing (zoom not working correctly if there are Folders or hidden tracks)...

The Lane zoom needs it's limitations removed. A Lane should be able to get as small as a single line of buttons and as large as filling the screen...

I have a number of other issues with the UI, but this one is so constant that it plagues me...

...and I have no problem with your optomistic attitude. I wish I could be. But I don't let any of this stop my work...

I look forward to the Bakers correcting this so I can complain something else already. I'm tired of this issue... ;-)

I still strongly recommend optional updates though, the benefits totally out weight the risks.

So if it's not broken and everything works, what would one benefit be?

Performance (often tons of patches), reliability and stability (yes MS often posts fixes in this area), and you get less issues with software depency issues as MS libraries are often updates in this area (if you don't use them they lie dorment anyway). Sorry that's 3 :) I don't see any disadvantages whatsoever other than as you say drivers (probably best from manufacturers site) and the crap MS tries to peddle like Bing which is probably best avoided.

Beep, I think this problem stems from me loading Win 8.1 over top of Vista 64. This pc is still smooth and fast despite that fact.

When I first installed X3 months back, the installation stalled. After getting a tip on this forum, I downloaded the latest c++ redistributable from Microsoft and X3 loaded fine. Like I said, X2 runs great on this machine along with soundforge11, reaper4 and well, everything else. X3e on my machine is usable, but sluggish with only a few audio tracks. Once it starts getting sluggish, the graphics on the mixing console also hang and jump.

A temp solution has been to narrow the tracks in console view and not show the meters; then it works pretty well. But I like to see my meters when I mix. :)  Given that X3 has such a good reputation, and my machine is in great shape hardware-wise; I think the logical solution is to wipe the drive clean of the Vista bits and start with a fresh Win 8.1 install...

Have you tried a different graphics card?
Many seemingly impossible to track down "bugs" have been cured this way

I did and was hoping that would cure the problem but unfortunately, it didn't. Added Radeon HD 5450 1gb card...

Nothing like a clean install. Updates never do the job fully you just got to see the errors on the windows event viewer afterwards. Don't forget to run windows update several times inc optional updates before you install any applications (straight after windows install). Cheers.

Thanks Alex, I will. Not looking forward to the program install step(s). But it will be worth it for a little performance boost to have a naturally as possible clean registry.

FWIW: I too install all the primary updates. My thinking is the team at microsoft is working to improve my system for security and performance. I seldom install an optional update like you mentioned, bing, ms essentials...

I've experienced some issues with clicking/stuttering audio when moving my mouse.

Sounds to me like USB mouse and USB audio interface

Me too.  I've noticed that the most power hungry peripheral that I have is my (USB) mouse.  By far.  I've just dug up my (what, fifteen-year old ?) PS/2 mouse and will try that out tomorrow to see if there's a difference.

Not to diminish the troubles that some are having as always, but overall there seems to be a serenity?

I think most are serene by default...

You're my baseline, Keni.  I don't yet have access to sufficient free time to use Sonar enough to have a valid opinion (and I'm staying far away from X2 take lanes) but I look forward to the day that you are completely happy with it.  Then I'll know the time has come for me to pour my life into it.

I don't always apply optional patches, but do always review them - and I may well apply ones I feel will help, such as redistributables, etc.

Others, like Bing, nah.
