BTW, I, too, have a template already set up for this kind of tracking. Also, I have never used the separate audio tracks ouput for my drums, Superior 2.4. Most all of my drum work is traditional drum tracks. No slick FX on just the snare or anything like that. All the tools in Superior get me where I want to go. The only thing I do about reverb is to choose a kit that was sampled in a room close to the size of the room I want. I then crank the room mics up a bit so it fits in the mix a bit louder. I would rather hear that gazillion dollar studio room than a fake reverb. One thing though. I disable the bleed mics on the kick and all the cymbals, in most cases. Just the snare and toms get the room treatment. This is for large rooms only. Mostly that 80s power ballad type sound. This makes for a cleaner top end and tighter bottom. You notice I said in most cases. Smaller rooms, I will just turn the ambient mics up to taste on all drums and cymbals.
I mix in Toontrack and just use stereo outs in the DAW. I've also been toying around with this technique in AD and BFD. I must say my train of thought is very old school about tracking. I grew up recording in the late 60s-early 70s era. You were lucky to have an 8 track tape machine so tracking decisions were made very early on. You didn't have the luxury of 512 tracks! So anyway I can get my audio track count down without sacrificing the quality of the work is a plus to me. Well, so much for my raving this morning. I'm glad this thread came along though.
