for instance I go to the vocalrider (write enable fader rider) and keep plug open then hit play and no automation is written. am I missing something

try clicking the automation write on and off and see if that helps.
 
I saw an issue were writing automation from the TH2 didn't record even when write was enabled.
 
I walked them through it and got them to repeat the issue in tech support so they know it's possible. Just clicking and the W twice seems to resolve my issue with it, but it can be frustrating if you fail to capture something.
 
One thing to keep in mind is that automation should be visible in Track view during recording, so if you don't see it... better check it.

if you click it twice doesn't it go into full parameter mode

tried the suggestion it went into full parameter mode but could choose one parameter

so that means it works for you?

still having a problem with vst3 plugs not allowing only one parameter to be chosen for adjustent for automation. for instance if I am recording real time automaton for the fader rider( waves vocal rider) and  I have to make and adjustment for the target (it will record that adjustment) I don't want to record the target automation just the fader automation.
tried deselecting the target parameter and it will stop the fader rider automation (this should not happen) what should happen is that parameter and all others should be able to deselecting and the selecting parameter is the only auto -mation that should record
